Value of Old House Bricks?

The previous owner of my house had used old solid red housebricks to create (mortarless) raised beds in the garden.

I’ve removed all the beds and now have a pile of 150 mainly decent bricks.

My house was built in the 1980’s and the bricks clearly predate my house.

Do the bricks have any value and would a reclamation merchant be the best way to save them going to the tip?

I had…can’t quite remember…around 900 of the ****’ things after pulling them up from a (attempt by a previous owner) terribly laid patio.

Tried reclamation yeards which were happy to pay but only if I brought them to them and they would reject any without “one good face”. Basically I may well have done two or three trips with them, only to have a fair chunk rejected and ended up with fifty or sixty quid.

So I flogged them on gumtree. Two young lads came round with a van late in the evening to take them to a job. They were landscapers starting up their own little business. They were going to have to take them in around four trips. I really felt for them – lovely lads – so I loaded up my own van as well as theirs and we did two trips to get them to their job. They gave me a hundred quid for them. Hopefully it’ll pay for whatever damage I did to my suspension driving them over there with them. 😆

So basically, my advice is to flog them on gumtree. Reclamation yards aren’t really going to go out of their way for 150 bricks.

i’ve been clearing our plot ready to start our barn conversion and have been putting everything on pallets in one of the sheds with easy access.

So far have:

>600 old bullnose bricks in good condition.
1 1/2 pallet crates of old pan tiles in good condition (no missing corners, tabs intact).
1 pallet crate of damaged pan tiles
Couple of dozen double roman type tiles where the middle bump only goes half way and about a dozen glass ones to match.
1 pallet of large flag stones (1/2 pallet size)
1 pallet crate of double roman tiles (keeping these as they match the building so will be used on the boot room extension)
About 20 or so nice decorative ridge tiles.
20 or so slate floor tiles

And then some groups of modern floor and roof tiles that are probably destined for hardcore along with the remains of the broken tiles and bricks and didnt make the cut.

Also got a tractor wheel and tyre which nearly gave me a hernia lifting it up and when we dismantle that shed we will have the pillars which are made from old cast iron lampposts with the tops chopped off.

Did think about calling a reclamation yard for simplicity but will probably stick them on gumtree. Ebay suggests £1 a brick for the bullnose ones so that will go towards a new bike the new house build 🙁

They will be worth 6 figures…. if stacked nicely with a rope around them.

I’m in Winchester and they are a bit heavy to post so I might try the ‘put a rope around them’ suggestion!

Got this going on at the moment, i have some “imperial” size old bricks, wanted them shifting, looked online and found people selling them as there seems to be “some” demand for them. So tried at £20 for what i think is about 130 bricks…

Got no interest, realised all i actually wanted is them gone, so put them on for free and there getting collected tomorrow! Job done.

Me and a pal recently knocked down a garage and advertised the pile of about 1000 bricks on ebay for free, they soon went.

One of the guys who had them said they often pay about £10 – £20 for stacks of bricks if they really have to but most of the time people just want them gone so they go for the free ones.

Winchester…hmm.. might be worht a diversion if I can get them all in a car. How much do 130 bricks weigh?
