use sumo seatpost

I have a use seatpost with those bloody awful 2mm Allen bolt adjusters. Have upgraded to the Cyclops adjuster that takes the mighty 4mm Allen bolt. The whole thing still slips and is a dangerous, poorly thought out engineering **** of a design.
The Sumo head appears to be better thought out, before I buy can someone confirm that the designer hasn’t gone all flowery on us and that it is a simple,easy to use design with a big bolt you can crank up.
How many hours they spent designing something that is far worse than everything else out there I can only guess.
PS anything less than a 4mm Allen bolt is a crime.
PPS yes, my nuts are still sore.

hiya, have had both, and totally agree the cyclops head is useless! Now have the sumo, and it’s not a fantastic design, but no worse than similar on bontrager/joplin posts. Highly recommend some carbon grip paste on the mating surfaces to prevent you having to torque the bolt up too tight, which makes it a right pig to adjust!

If you have a lot of issues with slipping I’d highly recommend a Raceface post, easy to adjust, and really good clamping mechanism, never had one slip!

1. Er, the clamp on the Sumo can be problematic -if you use the correct torque, it slips so the angle of the saddle changes. If you ‘crank it up’ the cup-shaped thing can split. It works if you apply high friction Pace carbon grease to the internal surfaces of the clamp and use the correct torque. Fiddly.

2. On two of my Sumos, the bond between the clamp and the post has gone so the saddle can rotate – and creak. To be fair, USE fixed that FOC.

To be honest, I’d get a Thomson or Easton next time.

I had the clamp section of a RF Deus simple detach from the rest of the post a few years back. I wouldn’t buy one again, the way the clamp works means that pressure on the rear of the saddle tends to lever the clamp section upwards and away from the post. Not such a great idea ime 😐

Need a suspension seatpost that is long so options are very limited.

With carbon grease on the clamping surfaces, the Sumo’s okay – despite my comments above, I have a couple of them on different bikes and they’ve been used a lot. I’d use a torque wrench though if you can, the cup portion of the clamp can split if you overdo things with the allen keys… On the plus side, you can get replacement clamps separately, so if you do break it, the post isn’t a lost cause:

+1. Except they didn’t fix mine. Nearly £100 down the drain after 13 months. Grr.

I wish someone else made suspension seatposts, or that USE would licence a decent mount from someone else.

I am still carrying 2 injuries from the summer when the last one broke. Including a knee injury that prevents me running. As you can probably tell, I am mighty peed off with USE.

Ditch the Sumo and get a Thudbuster?

And if you need a long post the XL version is 450mm.

Been very happy with mine, looks a bit odd but does the job flawlessly.

It is, in that there’s a conventional Sumo and a suspension one too.

I’ve got a carbon sumo post and while it’s light and comfy, the clamp is a pita.. Need to strip and clean it every two or three rides or it creaks and squeaks like an old sprung mattress, or slips….. 😕
