Unusual Dartmoor routes?

Pretty familiar with the moor, especially the east and north sides. I keep looking at the maps and trying to work out some extra routes for the new fat bike. anyone able to help expand the repertoire with some weird Dartmoor routes?

Have you done the lych way? It’s an experience…

I’ve got a gpx route from Plymouth to Exeter across Dartmoor if you fancy it. Prob about 70% ish off road.

Though we need to do that N-S again with some tweaks.

Cool. If we get done freezing weather we should get on it. I love the sound of creaky mires 🙂

I think there’s not a single bit that’s not rideable, and I think I have a rideable route for the dartmoor bounds…

I’ve done a bit of the lych way, I bet the western section was tough!

I did it at the back end of a dry spell and it was a slog.

How did you cross N-S? Hangingstone Hill then?

Been riding a bit round the dart valley nr newbridge. Some fun stuff hiding there.

N-S went:

Milatary road
Hangings tone
Sittaford
Postbridge
Bellever
Hexworthy
Terry Hill
Nakers Hill
Redlake
Old railway.

New versions go left or right of Nakers Hill. That place was tough.

You can try the bridlepath loop round Gosden. Can’t really recommend it unless it’s been dry.

We tried it clockwise, and the route up varied between a river and a muddy river bed. Down was fairly fun…

Took some mates for a tour of West to East Dartmoor starting at Princetown & crossing over to Bellever, Grimspound, Hameldown, Jay’s Grave, Bowerman’s Nose, Manaton, Water lunch at the ‘Hound of the Basket Meals’ van then back via Hameldown, Warren House Inn for a lemonade 😉 Bellever, Whiteworks & back to Princetown. Was 45 miles & 4,700ft of climbing – Link to Strava route – could be interesting in Winter on a fat bike, we did it in the dry Summer 🙂

That’s a pretty good loop crispy. Add in the cleave and it’s pretty well “the” Dartmoor epic.

Another really lovely loop is in a bit different part of Dartmoor – starting in Dunsford, Bridford Wood, then it takes you to Castle Drogo area and back. It includes one of the hardest off-road climbs around – Fingle Bridge bridleway! Really nice route, let me know if you want GPX file.

I’ve done it in wet and it was wet, but rideable.

In the summer it’s just unbelievably awesome!!!

When I lived that way We did a awesome Plymuff to Exeter route taking in as much tech as we could find. Went up the Plym Valley onto Burrator,Princetown then Trail of Certain Death, Hookney, Cwm Down, Bowermans, Cleave, Chudleigh and onto Haldon. With the trails round Hennock now think you could improve it further still

Also looked at a possible source to sea route using the Teign.

Another one alas on Exmoor that I planned but never did was the coast path from Minehead to Barnstable using the train as the return.

Braunton 150 and skip the train. Doing it in April

Wont use the coast path though will it as its not bridleway.

Ta for the gpx. Got some interesting choices in there and some long section of hiking through swamp.

When I get back near a PC I’ll make some suggestions.

The swamp bits are not too bad, especially on 5inch tyres. Because I want to stick as close as possible to the course of the river my plan is to do it in early febuary if/as/when the bogs freeze this year.
I’ve ridden some of the shoreline stuff and it’s rideable.

Best trips to fur tor are when you can straight line it.
