Currently running xr4 on the front and 2.1 Ground control rear. Thinking of something bigger on the back, either an Ikon or an Ardent Race 2.2. I mainly ride South Downs and QECP, so a bit of xc and a bit of trail. Any suggestions or comments?

My favourite soul tyre combination is spesh butcher on the front and maxxis ardent on the rear. I’ve looked at the ardent race and it’s hardly any lighter than the standard ardent (in 2.25 folding) so never bothered changing.

I have the XR3 2.2 (tubeless) on the rear of my Soul too. Works great for me…(with the XR4 2.3 up front)…

I really like teh specialized captain control 2.2 on the back, if you can still find one- they’re discontinued I think but absolutely superb, fast when stood up, grippy when leaned, ideal. Not the toughest mind.

I’m rocking a Grond Control 2.3 on mine. Purgatory up front is soon to be replaced with a Butcher.

Butcher/purgatory, control fine on rear, but go for a grid on the front is my recommendation.

I also ride QECP and SDW but prefer SDW at the moment. I ride the Five at QECP but always the Soul for SDW.

I’m currently running Conti X-King (front and rear) on the Soul. It’s a great tyre, durable, hard wearing, fast rolling and not a puncture in 800 miles.

The rear is starting to wear but I reckon it’ll clear 1000-1200 miles by the time it’s changed for a new one. The front still looks new!

I’m running the Black Cili Protection with tubes for you info.

    X-Kings look awesome too….

Thanks fo all the replies. Plenty to research.Benmotogp how do you find the grip on the x kings? I did run the supersonics but it was a long time ago!

I’m running Purgatory 2.3 (look closer to 2.2) front and rear on my Solaris. Had them a few weeks now and they’ve handled wet and dry conditions really well – I will probably keep them on all year… I’m tempted to try a Butcher up front though! 😀

For XC the X-Kings have all the grip you will need, even when wet. If you do QECP in the summer, I’d say leave an X-King on the rear and put a RubberQueen up front.

I think the RubberQueens are now called MountainKing however, but same tyre. Again, go for the Black Chili compound. Expensive but worth the extra grip and longevity….l

    ‘Tyres for soul’

Bike brand is a complete irrelevance, tyres for the conditions and types of subsoil you ride are the factor to consider.

I’d agree brand is irrelevant as most manufacturers will make a tyre to suit all conditions. I’ve had good experiences with Continental and Maxxis so am happy to stick with those brands for now.
I’d happily try other brands if there was a particular tyre that best suited the kind of riding I do and came with good reviews.

You’re just wishing you still had your Soul so you could contribute 😀

Haha! Not at all. At 40 I’m firmly in the FS camp now sir, I need all the speed I can get!. I always thought I’d never be without a soul, but it seems I was wrong.

So if FS is quicker, should I just sell both bikes and get the SC 5010 I lust for?

Rubber Queen = Trail King, Mountain King sits between that and the Xking
