Managed to trap my femoral nerve – not sure how. Basically feels like someone has shoved a screwdriver into my thigh. Constant medium level of pain with the odd turn up to 11 for good measure. Walking makes it feel better for a bit as do some stretches, but sitting and lying are a nightmare. Paracetamol and nurofen do nothing, cocodamol barely touches the edges.

GP has offered me an appointment in 2 weeks ?. Been told it can take anything from a few days to a year ? to sort.

Anyone have experiences/advice/very very hard drugs?

Not the same thing but about 20yrs ago I had a persistent genitofemoral nerve issue that sounds very similar.

They treated it with steroid injections into an area where the thigh meets the torso. The injections were conducted in a day theatre with full scrubs etc. Imagine a 4inch long but very thin needle. The pain was was worse than the nerve problem but fixed it after 2 of the buggers. I hope yours is easier to put right

who diagnosed it ?  If it’s that sore I suggest you need some more urgent medical assessment and possible treatment.

If it’s been properly diagnosed,  maybe see a private physio, it may be they can untrap it to relieve the pressure. I had an issue with a nerve being squeezed under my shoulder

If Dr Google has diagnosed it, might need to get to a local urgent treatment centre, minor injuries or whatever

GP phone diagnosis based on symptoms – pain is mid thigh. If it’s like this tomorrow then I’ll go back to them and ask for a referral to private if they don’t do anything.

Go to a physio. GPs are great for general stuff and passing you on to the experts

I had this about 30 years ago – diazepam injection at A&E eased things initially, then physio had me gradually up and about over about a month. It’s become an occasionally recurring issue I can manage with core strengthening alongside stretching and mobility work, but nothing particularly life limiting as long as I don’t get lazy with the preventative stuff. Funnily enough, it’s grumbling at present, as I was lying about with Covid for a week.

get seen by a physio as soon as you can – go private if you can stretch to it financially

Just a quick update on this in case anyone else suffers.

The trapped nerve lasted about 10 days. Pretty much 24 hour pain, with a bit of relief if I could find a good position. However, cold baths, lots of ice and ‘flossing’ exercises seemed to relieve it. I physically felt the nerve release one evening (a lovely feeling). The leg isn’t quite back to normal however, feels a bit weak and bruised, like someone punched me a day ago. Apparently this is normal and can take 4-8 weeks to subside.

Ow! That doe snot sound like fun at all, but good to hear that it’s released now. Are you planning to carry on with the exercises that you have been doing?

Physio advised to do them 3x a week for the next 8 weeks, and I guess we’ll see how things are then. But stretching is something I should do more of anyway so will try and keep it up.
