There's a nail in my tyre..

It had a slow puncture for ages and ages, 18 months perhaps, then it started to get a little quicker then it became quite a bit quicker suddenly, so that it went flat in about two days. At this point I put some tyre weld in it thinking I was going to get winter tyres fairly soon, and it how holds air. However the other day I found a nail in the tyre right at the edge. Doesn’t look as if it’s been there for 18 months though.

So – repair the tyre, replace the tyre, or leave it.

Replace it before you get a blow out.

Not (yet) convinced it is likely to blow out tbh.

whatever you do, don’t start digging at the nail to try and get it out whilst there’s pressure in the tyre. You’ll have your eye out.

they won’t repair a tyre with a nail in the edge of it, btw so you’re stuck with tyre roullette or a new tyre.

Holes in tyres at the edge, generally aren’t repairable.
How much is a new tyre for peace of mind that it’s not going to suddenly fail??

Yep, the same one that isn’t driving the car til it’s sorted and has moved the car seats to the other car.

You will struggle to repair the tyre if the nailis at the edge, there are repairable limits on what can be done.

If you have had a slow leak previously check the rims, they could be corroded and letting air pass at the bead of the tyre (this is what is happeing on mine just now). It is easy to test – remove wheel from car, inflate tyre then spray some soapy water round the wheel and look for bubbles.

conclusion – Replace tyre you probabley wont be get it repaired if it has a nail in or near the edge but check out you rim first at it may need some work so tha the new tyre seals propery.

No. That’s why all new tyres come with a nail fitted as standard.

swap it for a brass screw….much nicer and it wont rust

No but it can allow water ingress to the steel belts which then corrode leading to separation & integrity issues.

and of course the nail will come out on a cold, dark and wet night and leave you in the middle of nowhere with a flat tyre.

A nail probably won’t make your tyre fall apart.

If its to close to the edge no one would repair it. You could do it yourself though. Get one of those kits fro ebay. Would it be safe………..

Tyre weld seals up bead leaks pretty well.

But come on, just take it down to kwikfit or your local inderpendant.

Whether the hole could be patched or not you’ve been running the tyre soft for a year and half, presumably hoping it would just get better all by itself. Having done that the whole tyre is your concern, not the nail and its surroundings. Even repaired its not a tyre I’d want to knowingly use.

No, not really, I’ve checked pressure before every trip, so I know it’s not been driven soft.

I’ve repaired a car tyre from a tack with those rubbery string things. Was fine for the next 8 months until it wore out. The tack was only in it for about a mile though.. I could hear it going round, and near the centre of the tyre.
I chucked 100ml of stans in there for good measure though!

If its a good tyre i’d repair it with a UST tyre patch. This is not a worm type or a normal innertube patch but a proper UST tyre repair patch that goes on the inside of the tyre & can be bought from CRC for under a fiver.

Mr Moli’s spare tyre, though which one he’s talking about is, well, anyone’s guess.

I’d stick it on Mr Moli, it’ll last longer than the one you’ve got hissing away on the drive.

At this point I put some tyre weld in it ….

So – repair the tyre….

I’d love to see the guys face at the tyre shop when you ask him to repair a tyre full of tyre weld!

Get some winter tyres ordered and get them fitted now!

You’ve got a tyre full of weld with a nail on the edge, it won’t be getting repaired at a normal tyre shop, get yourself covered and get the thing repaired.
