The confidence to just go for some carving on a bit of wood already fitted is amazing.

think this ol’ lady is pretty “tally ho esque” though she pre dates tally ho she certainly been better cared for.

Fascinating reading up on her history and the plank-on-edge style of racing boat from that era. However it turns out she also had the Tally Ho treatment… rebuilt entirely except for the original keel timbers in the early 80s!

Quite the cautionary tale for Leo. Seems she was practically un-sailable after her rebuild (recreating her original rig) though more manageable now. She gone through quite a few owners, nice as she is she’s not the kind of vessel you can just pop down of a weekend and have quick sale to around the Solent then home. You’d need to rustle up a few burly youths just to get the mainsail up 🙂 and probably the reason she has 8 berths! (perhaps another warning for Leo :/ )

It’s probably been asked and answered on here before, but is anyone else watching Acorn to Arabella?

I binge watched it (sort of) over a month or so while training…really enjoyed it, and a different approach to Leo’s.

every time you think it looks great they add another bit of hardware or finishing piece and it goes up a level.  It’s going to be completely amazing when finished.

she’s is going to look magnificent under full sail for sure, bet Leo quite believe its got this far and so close to seeing the sea 🙂 !

It’s also interesting for the future of the Sampson Boat Co, IIRC Leo mentions about setting up shop back in the UK (build cutters on the cornish riviera IIRC) but given the very professional crew he has now in the NW USA and as the boss he’s got to be looking at his next project as a shipwright! I know he’s talks a lot about Tally Ho as an educational project and taking her to far off places he doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who would leave his staff high and dry.

I think that the crew (with the exception of Patrick) are all professionals who are working for themselves, rather than being Leo’s ‘staff’. I’m sure they will have other jobs waiting when they’re done with Tally Ho! He might keep Patrick as a pet 😉

I’d like to think he will be bringing Tally Ho! back across the atlantic fairly soon after launching & re-commissioning.

I’m not sure Leo has a work visa for the USA…

I worry about the weight of this yacht, and he said its center of gravity is higher than before.

I think when it goes in the water it will be touch and go whether it will capsize or go straight down 😆

It (Tally Ho!) is a great project. If you’re interested in learning the craft, why not check out the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis? They offer both week-long short courses, and a full time 40hrs a week for 40 weeks ‘long course’, for which bursary funding may be available. Plenty of places available for the next intake in February.. (apologies for the shameless plug, but my kids need shoes).

    Boom, baby!

So good to see a light at the end of the construction. I know there’s a lot still to go – but surely a bottom wetting in spring is on the cards?

That’s sad. If she and Rahul hadn’t believed in the young Englishman with a rotten boat and big dreams, then it might not have happened.

Rest in peace, Darlene, and my condolences to Rahul, her family and friends.

Yep.  That was very moving and beautifully done.  It also shows how a quite simple gift from them can then turn into something much bigger than they could ever have imagined.  You don’t always have to see the full picture, just the bit you have to believe in.
