Sunglasses At Night

No, not the the wonderful Corey Hart song but I’ve found recently my vision is really suffering at night from the glare from headlights and streetlights.

Is there a lens colour that would help with this, but would still be safe to wear?

Hmm. I think I’ve got some orange lenses for my specs. Would they be close enough?

You’d be better going to an optician and getting plain lenses with an anti-glare coating.

Wot druid said. I’ve tried the yellow lenses at night, and I found that once it had gone beyond dusk, it was like wearing actual sunglasses!

Yeah that’s the worry.

To be fair, I’m finding the same problem when driving, so it’s probably worth talking to an optician for a more permanent solution. No problems at all with my actual vision, but the glare at night makes it impossible to see at certain points 🙁

Get your eyes checked first. When I first noticed I needed glasses it was the glare of oncoming traffic that was my first clue, once I got glasses (and later laser) I realized the massive ball of light coming toward me on the road was in fact just a car with headlights on.

Yeh any lenses with colour in them will be a no-no in my opinion. I use clear lenses which filter the light a little bit.

Last year I bought my first pair of bins with all the “special coatings”, including anti-glare and anti-scratch. Within six months the lenses were virtually opaque. On doing a bit of research I found that the coating responds badly to steam, sweat etc, so wearing them out biking, wiping the sweat off them with grit covered gloves then leaving them on the sink while I have a shower probably wasn’t a smart move. So where they had got tiny scratches from wear, the coating was bubbling and peeling off all over.

Just my experience, there may be other, more durable coatings available.

I have found even oakleys clear lenses affect your night vision,
weirdly it is worse with led lights compared to either hid or
halogen types!

I use a yellow lense in my M frames at night for that very reason, to stop the headlights glare. Even makes the HID whiteness look more normal.
