As jonv said do whatever you think works for you..

Heres my approach and feel free to rip the whatever if you like

If in a few weeks/months time its not working then I will know that for me its the wrong approach if however it does…..

So quite simply im 236lb so need to do something as weight has crept up over the years (41years old)

What I have decided to do is the following

Cut out the alcohol, I’m not a regular drinker but could do £100 over a weekend going out for quality not quantity ale (how daft does that sound when you see the value of the spend?)

Cut out the sugar, never was a big fan of sweet stuff, even though I enjoy baking cakes, so instead I will bake for freinds/family

White Carbs, (Bread/Rice/Pasta/Potatoes) now this is a funny one as i have always found myself feeling bloated after indulging in these, and yes i know there is not a lot finer than fresh oven hot bread with cold butter and decent cheese, but as i can nver exercise restraint when i start, I feel for me its best to step away from it, in fact I have cut out bread completely for the time being, just sto see how i feel.

So I have taken a kind of paleo approach as someone described it to me, nothing preprepared and just fresh meat fish and vegtables and fruit, talkes a little meal prep, but so far so good.

Thats the food now about the exercise part, I enlisted a PT mid December, and i have a programme i am workiing on 2-3 days a week, which I then mix with a coomute on the other 3-2 days dependant, then maybe either a swim or a play on the muddy bike at the weekend

So 6 days into January and how do I feel, well my energy level is up a little this may be a result of the fact that im sleeping better, or could be a combination of no alcohol and just tired from exercise.

So thats me so far, I hope everyone is doing well and as I said pull my current method to pieces, but i will wait and see if it works, if not I’ll eat my hat, well maybe not my hat, as its macro nutrient content i’snt in line with my eating plan.

Edit.. Wow its like my longest post..

    I have a saddle sore.

I’ve only ridden 10 sodding miles, and it’s a proper bloody, puss filled & erupting one.

My arse currently looks like sudocream cat.

I have a stinking cold which put paid to plans for a ride this morning and will most likely scupper a 100km ride this weekend.

It’s also making me eat sugary things so my brain will function enough to work (freelances don’t get sick days).

    🙁

Here’s a good recipe that seems to keep me away from Takeaways (or at least helps)

I posted this on STW on another diet thread 6 years ago!!!

This recipe was invented by me has no exact amounts and is not in anyway authentic but it is tasty and seems healthy.

Make all of this in a really big pan

Fry 2 massive onions chopped into big(ish) pieces in as little oil (teaspoon?) as you dare. If you’ve got some garlic throw that in as well, can’t hurt, and when you think they are looking nice, add a bit of water to the pan. They should be sort of brown(ish) and soft.

Chuck in some tinned tomatoes, 2 or 3 tins usually does it, (depends on how tomatoey you like it).

Chop up 2 Butternut Squashes in to pieces that are a bit bigger than an oxo cube and throw them in the pot.

Slice up 3 red & 3 green chilies

Some mixed herbs and a bit of paprika go in

Peas, peppers, raisins, apple all seem to work well.

Throw in a liberal amount of curry power (half of one of those Tesco pots usually)
Simmer for about an hour to break down the squash and thicken.

And because you’ve made loads put into old chinese tubs and freeze. Easy dinner when your knackered and fancy a takeaway.

Tastes good, eat with brown rice add a bit chicken do what you like, no rules

Apart from 1 teaspoon of oil and curry powder everything that goes in is pretty good for you

    HTH 😀

1 week in, 2lb gone here too. Down from 187 to 185…

So far all I’ve done is cut down intake (not cut out) of various things including sugar, refined carbs. Oh and I’ve not had a drink since the 29th Dec either…

One “diet” that has been recommended to me is to cut out carbs in the evening full stop. I’m normally a glutton in the evening, which is a bad habit I know. Really going to focus on eating less food in the evening, and eat my dinner earlier than normal (10pm is quite common for me!). Cut the potatoes out of my evening meal last night (so just had chicken and veg) and didn’t miss them as much as I thought I would, but woke up feeling a lot less bloated than I would normally.

Next step will be to gradually start pre preparing more meals, eating healthier equivalents etc.

Like IHN says, to keep the weight off it’s got to become habit. I know I can lose a stone in 2 weeks if I need to, I’d just live on cabbage soup and only drink water or black coffee! Don’t fancy even starting it mind, let alone trying to keep it up!

Well the toothache was upgraded to abscess and has helped me lose over 5lbs since Tuesday. Only calorie intake has been from soup and stella. The antibiotics have started to work now though, so concerned that once my mouth isn’t so sore that I might start eating again.

Apparently the “no carbs in the evening rule” is based on a survey from the 80s which showed that people who ate carbs in the evening were likely to be fatter.

Unsurprisingly people who generally eat carbs late at night are less athletic, and more often the type of carbs people eat at night are likely to be crisps, chips pizzas etc this is compounded by the fact that salty carbs will make your body hold water making you appear to have gained weight, but there’s nothing magical about carbs at night as opposed to other foods.

Sorry if that comes across as

I haven’t weighed myself, but have been reAlly good this week. No bread, fizzy drinks or beer. Have been running and high speed dog walking ( a slower form of running which can also result in dislocated shoulders) . This evening however the depression has kicked me in the bollocks and I have eaten a shit load of pizza and coke (no hookers tho ). Back on the wagon again tomorrow. Rice instead of bread, no fuzzy drinks, very low sugar intake etc etc….

Mrs Vader bought them home and cooked them. So I would have been having chicken and veg… still what’s done is done. Work it off tomorrow….

    **** sake…

Rang the GF asking what she wanted for dinner, trying to be good I said “how about something light and healthy like a stir fry”…

Chicken Kebab and chips was her response!

Chicken Kebab and chips was her response!

To be honest you went about it all the wrong way.

If you had rang saying “What would you like from the takeaway; I’m thinking a greasy kebab”, you would have elicited a response that would have inferred “I’d like the total opposite to what you’re suggesting”.

You’d get man-points for listening to what she said, you’d get what you wanted, plus some exercise into the bargain for being such a great bloke.

..and let’s face it, no gusset was ever wrecked with the line:

how about something light and healthy like a stir fry?

Major pangs earlier ended up running errands after work so was late back..

I’m just glad I cleared all temptation from house, so turned left over chicken into a banging curry with cauliflower rice

Not as good as a regularf riday night special, but the chilli kick helps

2.5lbs down this morning despite a crap day yesterday food wise. Treating as a blip and forgetting about it. Got a run later and 1st club ride with my new bike club tomorrow, going to be hanging off the back!

Good going Rocco, sounds like a decent start! I had 2/3rds of a bottle of red and an entire lindt bear last night *facepalm*

I’ve got 2 late shifts this weekend, which usually involves takeaway pizza/Chinese/curry for dinner, but instead I’ve just lifted my roast veg and cajun spiced chicken breasts out of the oven to take with me. 8)

I am very very fat so there is plenty to lose 😉 and I ate even more than normal for the week before I started this.

but I am not taking any other than the fornightly weight as fact as as mentioned that could just be a good day in terms of what it appears like.

perfect example, where weight fluctuates. If you weigh next week and you’re 6lbs down on starting weight you should be delighted but the impulse is to be disappointed because you’re a lb higher than this one-off 😉

I am used to be very very fat

but now you aren’t as fat. Go you!

Had to move our sheds today, Christmas chub came in handy for once, I could apply body weight to just shunt them round. They’re in place now so I can lose it all now.

I know what you mean – got a new king size mattress delivered today. Had to get the old one down the stairs – with bend – and into the back of the car, then to the tip, back out the car, up the ramp and into the skip.

Back home, new mattress up the stairs – with bend – and onto the bed.

I’m going back to the tip tomorrow to buy their skip of mattresses. There is a market for some sort of Boot Camp exercise class involving shoving large heavy mattresses round a field, and when you’ve had enough you can drop it on the ground for a rest 😀
