Whats the best way to do this without the proper tool? I was thinking of cutting the end of a broom handle and using that and a hammer.

The more common version is to thread in a bolt and tap that. Use a long enough one, and you can tap it on the side to straighten it when the SFN doesn’t go in straight. (personally I think they’re made like that in the factory)

I use an old (longish) bolt, a bit of copper tubing and a hammer. The copper tubing is softer than the SFN or headtube, so protects your bike bits (a bit anyway) from an over zealous battering!

I bit the bullet a while back and bought the proper tool in a sale. I had cause to use it for the first time last night. It literally took 15 seconds work and it was done.

I’d say find the cheapest possible tool. Its not the sort of thing where having a fancy brand name will make a difference.

Easiest thing is to use a block of wood and a hammer to set it flush with the top of the tube. THEN thread in a bolt and use that to tap it down the last few mm.

Use a canti brake block screwed into the SFN, and give one sharp clout. Depth is controlled, and if you strike it cleanly it will be dead-straight, too. if not you can spin the canti block around to the right angle and gently shift it over with your hammer.
