Sram 9 Speed Mech with Shimano 9 Speed Cassette?

As above really, I’m rebuilding my wife’s bike, and I’ve got an X9 mech, and no cassette, but I do have an old XT one knocking around.
I know that the Sram and Shimano shifters and mechs are non-compatible, but surely 9 speed is 9 speed.
