Have you read Laporte? a random selection of paragraphs ( 71 72 105 142) would suggest the court took the view the police were wrong not for turning the coaches “back all the way to London” as you say but for not letting them proceed and dealing with any thing that arose at Fairford .
But any way both Austin and Laport give clear authority for the right to protest and demonstrate the courts willingness to rightly scrutinize the polices choices as to how they conduct themselves the police cannot and should not be allowed to say there judgment as to what is necessary is the final arbiter.
