I think if you’re encountering that much mud you’ve either picked the wrong route or the wrong bike.

    Or the wrong mud*

*may equate to wrong route. But usually you don’t know what kind of mud you’ll encounter if you’re exploring, for instance.

I have tried loads of guards and ska edge AL are the best ones I have come across. Good looking, rattle free and tough.

I can never get photos on here properly.

I had SKS ‘normal’ guards on my Arkose but the downside was once they were on I’d never take them off again as that would be too much faff. I’ve settled on SKS Speedrockers on my Renegade as I can easily fit 40mm underneath and the coverage is essentially as good as normal guards. They don’t move about and they’re no worse for noise rubbing or trapped debris.

SKS Velo Cross 55s. The rear beaded some adaption but they do the job on solo rides. No so good and protecting those behind you on group rides. Can be fitted without removing wheels and if you’re using the on road only them the stays rent needed which makes fitting faster.

@iainc – cheers, I’ve copied you and ordered a Zefal Swan rear.

After yesterday’s short blast on the HT, I’m going to get some for that too. Just one 20m bridleway section left me looking like I’d done a ToughMudder

Gravel bike tyres don’t tend to pick up as much mud.

    I beg to differ!

My gravelling tends to include varying amounts of XC too.. gave up on mudguards due to the clay nature of the soil round here.

A lot of full length guards on here! I use SKS Bluemels on mine with 35mm tyres as my road (and a bit) bike, but switch to Crud Catchers front and rear for “proper” gravel (if that’s not a contradiction):

My Trek Crockett (not gravgrav bike) with prototype carbon ‘guards.

Enough clearance for 38s as I left the stays long.

Less mud on the tyres than I expected to see when I dug this photo out, but the bike is standing up on its own!

An awful bike ride – five and a half hours to do 35 miles. Pushing up hill in the mud, along the top and, in a couple of cases, down hill too.

OG Crud Guard, cracked and duct taped.
