Is there a rule of thumb which says singlespeed/fixed miles are worth more than miles on a geared bike?

And is a singlespeed mile considered the same as a fixed mile?

As the rubbish weather sets in I’m wondering how to maintain my weekly mileage of 100+

    “Worth more”?

Harder cos you can’t change down on the hills/have to keep pedalling downhill (fixed), therefore you’ll use the same number of calories/put out the same power output over a shorter distance

    ‘harder’

Sounds like people who choose to ride bikes other than geared are trying too hard.

road miles = 1/3rd mtb miles
SS road miles = 1.5 x road geared
Fixed off road = 2x SS mtb
Fixed on road = 2x geared road.

ps. I may of made this up.or something.

A mile is a mile, just get on and ride, depending on what the weather is doing and so many other factors will depend on how hard it is. Fixed is a nice way to travel depending on the terrain, does help give you a smoother pedal stroke. Not sure how many of the pro riders still use fixed for winter, imagine it’s a fair bit of watt bike or equivalent.

    No such rule.
Miles are not worth anything anyway. What matters is time and the effort you put in. Neither of which are dependent on the type of bike you ride.

No. You put the effort in no matter what you’re riding. You can work just as hard pushing gears as Singlespeed, only your speed changes.

Doesn’t matter what you ride, if you’re the sort who pushes hard, you’ll do that on any style of bike, so you’ll end up bushed.

I find singlespeed just as easy as gears on 50% of hills.

Sadly the other 50% of the hills are the uphill bits. 🙂
