It seems that he died after suddenly becoming ill whilst making a speech in North Macedonia. 69 is too young.

Big figure, definitely flawed but he played a massive part in defining his society. 69 definitely too young. RIP

I shared his desire for indendence . I didnt always agree with him or even like him,but his contribution to the campaign for indendence was massive and I admired him for that

Fantastic politician. Not a fan of his or his policies but undeniably a Fantastic orator

Hmm, I’m going to have to digest this before I can work out what I think. Again, shared his desire for independence and his debating style and oratory was admirable. But…… Even before the claims, counter claims, court case and scandal he was a personality I struggled to like. Which considering he was trying to achieve something I also wanted I always found disconcerting.

What the hell relevant topics would anyone in North Macedonia want to listen to Salmond about?

69 is not a great age. Thoughts with his family and friends.

Self rule? They were part of other units for long enough.

North Macedonia has been an independent country for 33 years and is on an EU accession path. I’m not sure they have much to learn from the Alba Party…

I don’t expect that would have troubled Salmond.

Hmm…not someone I knew much about, but the comment above (since deleted for some reason) about his work for RT made me curious to find out more about him. He seems to have been quite a complex character, inspiring great loyalty in some and enmity in others, like a lot of charismatic politicians.

Never particularly liked him as I always felt he had too much of an ego but I guess that’s what drove him to where he was, for better and worse. Like him or not, there’s no denying he achieved a lot for the SNP and the wider nationalist cause.

There seem to be a lot of posts getting deleted.

MOD – the day someone dies is not the day/thread to stick the boot in. Regardless of your opinion of them.

I have a feeling and some expectation that we are going to be hearing a lot more about him over the coming months.

I’ve got mixed feelings about him, he was very driven, intelligent, a great talker, well presented and could hold his own in debates.

There was accusations which he was found ‘not guilty’ and think there will be more revelations to come.

His nickname of ‘slippery salmond’ was well earned IMO.

Politics north of the border will be less interesting without him.
