    Hi All,

Working in the North East (Wallsend) for 5 weeks from next week on this, and bringing the bike (all work and no play etc etc…) So- recommend me some unmissable riding in the area?

    Will you have transport?

The location for your theatre provides you with the Hadrian cycleway which will take you into the city centre and beyond or out to the coast.
If you have some transport you can always head for Chopwell Woods 30 min drive roughly, Hamsterley is about an hour away and Drac could point you to the wonders of Northumberland

Chopwell is c12 miles from Toon and offers nice rooty singletrack – not masses, but good for a few hours in the evening. Local knowledge is essential however. Similarly Thrunton.

Hamsterley (in County Durham) and Keilder (in Northumberland) provide trail centre experiences if you like that sort of thing.

However, the NE’s real advantage, IMHO, is its moorland riding. Rothbury, Blanchland, Hexhamshire Common, Edmunbyers… all offer great riding.

There is a half decent run out to the coast from the centre of Newcastle, but only worth it in winter and/or in the dark as it isn’t great. If you like roadie stuff you’ll love Northumberland empty country lanes.

    Cheers all-

really useful. Yes, am taking the van, so can get out and about, as long as it’s not full of the set designer’s tat…

Will have to check out Chopwell at least- anybody got any routes etc?

You’d be welcome to come out with us lot (Newcastle mountain bike club/midaircrisis). We ride Sundays and thursday nights.

Thursday nights we can show you the delights of Jesmond dean, Gosforth park, Bluebell woods, Holywell dean etc.

Can’t remember whats coming up on Sundays we have a rather chaotic site and forum here[/url]

Aparently we’re going to Thrunton next week.

Go on the forum for more info as many aremore knowledgable than me. as I’ve not been here a year yet.

Local rides are varied and normally require a map and guide book to get the most out of them. Kielder, Chopwell and Hamsterley will offer cheap thrills. Then there is the STW forum ride on the 12th at Hamsterley.

Your equally welcome to ride with Beamish Oddsox, we ride every Wednesday night (7:00pm) and Sunday (9:00am faster pace and usually an away trip, and/or 10:00am more leisurely and local ie around Beamish Woods, Penshaw etc). Meeting place is outside the Shepard and Shepherdess near Beamish Museum.

    Cheers
    Nick

    Allendale – past hexham
    Hexhamshire Common
Alston / Garrigil – probably too far
Simonside / Thrunton woods near rothbury
    Hamsterley woods
Chopwell is closer to the city itself and some local knowledge will get you the best routes in and around.
