    Hi

    Long time lurker.

I’ve searched around for some time but can’t really find an answer to my noob question, so was hoping the community would be able to help out.

I’ve got a 2012 Boardman MTB Pro hardtail.

    As listed here:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/boardman-mtb-pro/

Managed to completely buckle the inner chainring when my new chain jammed in it and I didn’t realise and peddled really hard.

Was probably rather stupidly still riding around town with the bike, just not using the inner chainring – but as it was buckled it seems the bolts worked lose, and it’s now hanging on with just one bolt and obviously can’t use it until I get it fixed.

Seems it’s cheaper/easier to just replace the whole crankset than try to get a new inner chainring and bolts

And could mean I have more spares if other parts fail/need replacing

    It’s an FSA Comet BB30 42x27T crankset

The problem is I can’t easily get this.

I thought I’d stick with my 2×10 setup (I recently replaced my rear derailleur – which was a SRAM X9 2×10 with a SRAM GX 2×10 type 2.1 medium cage – for similar reasons – the X9 was no longer available).

That’s mostly because this is currently my only bike, and I plan to get a full fuss trail bike at a later point – so thought the greater gears would make sense for longer distance and cross country etc. cycling and shop runs.

But if I can just ditch one of the rings on the front I’m not adverse to that.

But basically, my noob question is – can I just use another BB30 crankset?

Does it have to be 2×10, or can it be a 1×10?

I assume it must be a 10 speed as 10 and 11 speed aren’t compatible right? I have a 10 speed chain and cassette etc.

Do the number of teeth for the chainrings matter?

I can find some with slightly different sized inner and outer chainrings.

I’m not that bothered by a change as long as it works and won’t cause problems.

Can you recommend something I can replace it with in the UK?

I’ve found this in the UK:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FSA-AFTERBURNER-386-BB30-DOUBLE-CHAINWHEEL-MTB-CHAINSET-40-28-175mm-10-SPEED-NEW-/391713924272

    FSA Afterburner 386 BB30 crankset

    – which I believe is just a better version of the FSA Comet I have?

    It’s 40/28 vs the 42/27 I have.

From the US on eBay I can get 42/30

I need to check whether I have 175mm or 170mm cranks. I assume I need the same as what I currently have there?

From the US, I can get the FSA Comet:

FSA COMET 386 Mountain BB30 Crankset 175mm 10 Speed 42/27t X10 Bike NEW IN BOX

Found a 39/27 on eBay from the US too.

Or can I use a SRAM crankset?

Can’t find any X9/X7 etc. anymore, but did see some GX 10 speed.

    https://www.bikeinn.com/bike/sram-gx-1000-bb30-10v-175-amg-36-22/136003416/p?id_producte=2715747

    Although that’s 36/22

    I can get 38/24 here:

    https://www.tweekscycles.com/uk/sram-gx-1000-10-speed-gxp-chainset-double-847102/?sku=SRMCW8348003

Actually that’s GXP (another standard?!), so not the BB30 I require.

    Bit of a minefield.

Any advice to get me back up and running would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I have a brand new unused 47/27 ring set with bolts off a 386 sl-k chainset that I’ll probably never use.
I think I have the 24mm sl-k carbon cranks too but they’ll probably only ever be 1x if they even get used again.

Not sure what shipping cost/timeframe would be though.

    Are you in the US?

Might be a lot of hassle – not sure what you’d want for it.

But do I need to get the exact same chainring sizes?

If not this seems like a good option perhaps:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FSA-AFTERBURNER-386-BB30-DOUBLE-CHAINWHEEL-MTB-CHAINSET-40-28-175mm-10-SPEED-NEW-/391713924272

    FSA Afterburner 386 BB30 crankset

    It’s 40/28 vs the 42/27 I have

    So pretty close.

And I believe should be an upgrade over the FSA Comet 386 BB30 crankset I have fitted.

Might have to call some bike shops otherwise, as can’t find answers on the web despite searching.

I did ask Halfords, where I got the bike originally, but they said to get it online as they’d charge a lot more heh.

Unless there’s anything restricting the height of the front mech, any chainset should do the job.

You should be able to go 1x and ditch the chain.

    11s rings should be fine.
