Ok, I might want the earth but here goes:

Large screen, so large smartphone or small tablet. Decent mapping software with gps capability, can also be used as car satnav.

Do any of the tablets have simcard/phone capabilities? (I’ll use bluetooth headset for calls!)

Battery to be extendable, maybe a plug-in unit, extended battery with fatter battery bay or can take replacement charged batteries for in-field swapout.

Should be sturdy enough to take in a bike rucksack. And not too heavy.

    Anyone got any recommendations?

I dunno about wanting the Earth, pretty much all the larger smartphones will do what you ask. Swappable battery rules out the iPhone though. A company called Anker (I know) make well-regarded extended batteries; I have a couple for my HTC Sensation.

If ‘sturdy’ is an issue then you’re in Motorola Defy territory, but then you could just get an Otterbox for whatever phone you choose.

Not sure as a tablet is the best fit here, unless you know something you’re not telling us.

Is there a small tablet that functions almost exactly like a massive smartphone? With simcard slot, gps, etc. Just an idea I have…

    Loads, I expect.

http://www.htc.com/www/tablets/htc-flyer/ for instance. Comes in WiFi or 3G versions, the latter having a SIM slot.

Duzznt matter if the iPhone battery can be replaced, just get a 5500MAh battery from eBay or DX with a couple of USB ports for charging two devices at once, cost about $20, that way you can charge little speakers, yer iPod, etc. I’ve never understood this obsession with the iPhone battery not being replaceable, it’s something that is vulnerable to damage, and a weak spot in the phones casing. Get a Phone with GPS and Viewranger, and Motion-X GPS along with one of these: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/597507018/pebble-e-paper-watch-for-iphone-and-android.

Samsung Note for size. Not sure what your mount options are there though.

I’ve been recommended the Note. There are mounts, armoured cases, ‘fat’ batteries etc. My upgrade has been put back to August now so there might be more stuff out there by then. I won’t be getting anything from apple, no-one I know is happy with their iphone.

Really? No one I know is unhappy with theirs.
(can think of at least 10 iphone users off the top of my head)

That seems to be the norm:

How many people are going to openly admit to buying such an expensive donkey? 😉

Fair point but other brand smartphones and tablets can be just as expensive and people are apparently happy to admit they are not satisfied with them.
