Recommend me an all-weather commuter tyre 700 x 23c

Hi,

Bought a second hand Planet X Uncle John for commuting and last night managed to damage both tyre on the way home. Front holed by small sharp stone and rear a chunk of tread ripped-off right down to the canvass. Had a look where it happened this morning appears as if some gravel has dropped of a lorry or similar

So I need two new tyres to suit riding on a mixture of surfaces.
