Is this likely to be within standard bike shop capabilities or am I going to need a specialised frame shop?

Why would you want to do this?

it’s specialised gear. Reamers cost silly money and most bike shops won’t carry one for each size from 22mm to 40.8mm, considering how often the job needs doing

    eg

    Seat Pin Reamer 27.2mm

    £127.18 (£108.24 outside EU*)

All other sizes also available to special order. Email for details

    Holder for above
    £43.83 (£37.30 outside EU*)

    Titanium Nitride Coating Available.

A little way from Guildford, as per your profile, but BikePlus in Croydon have reamed two frames for me.

Why would you want to do this

Because the seattube is supposed to be 27.2mm, yet I can’t get a 27.2mm in there, it’s just slightly too small. A 27.0 goes in but slips slightly over time. Tolerable enough to use but it isn’t ‘right’.

It may even be where the frame is being recycled and is slightly rusty inside. Run a 27.2mm reamer down it, wouldn’t need to take 0.2mm of metal out, and it’d be sorted.

Nuke. Work is Tadworth / Banstead so Croydon’s not impossible. Will call them tomorrow, thanks for the help.

Just a thought – how about trying a small flappy standing wheel on a drill, and running that down your seat tube? I did this to remove burrs on mine, worked a treat. (I know it’s not quite the same issue…)

Are you sure it is a 27.2 post that it takes?

You could try some carbon assembly paste on the 27.0 post to stop it moving.

I’ve had frames that have needed it doing before.. usually following being blasted/powder coated.

Must confess last one i just rammed a file in there and smoothed it down that way.

Just spoke to the guys at Bikeplus, sound really good and helpful so fetching it over there with the offending posts tomorrow. For the price I’ve been quoted, tbh I can’t be arsed with either a file or a flappy wheel although both might well work.

27.0 plus paste and a tight QR is bearable, but the 27.0 post I have is a comparatively rubbish one so the cost of a decent post vs the cost of the job is a no brainer. And then I can fit the decent 27.2 that i have already for the job.

Job done. Top blokes at Bike Plus, I’ll certainly use them again. And picked up a pair of NW shoes in their sale for half price as well (don’t tell the wife)

Thanks Nuke for the recommendation. 13 mins from my work.

Glad they got it sorted for you.

Yep, they are good blokes in BikePlus. Don’t live as local to them as I use to but I still use them.
