Nice to meet you all, thanks for the guided fun 🙂 Good to ride new stuff so close to home.

Cracking ride and I got to touch a wind turbine. It was good to ride with some fellow STW botherers too. For those into ride stat’s, our highest point was 640m bang on noon!

    640m ??? 😯 A Donald in Rammy?
Ramsbottom’s topography must have changed a lot since I last visited 🙂

    Weather was lovely.

I wasn’t going to take the camera out when it was lagging it down!

The weather wasn’t too bad at all. Much better than the forecast.

Looks like you had a good one. Is that pic of hts going to appear in the next Evans catalogue?

Video footage of me doing two SPD crapfalls™ due to a clogged cleat would be worth more.

    😯

BTW – you were spot on about the tailwind making the coal rd a tad easier.

Twas a crackin’ ride. Cheers to HtS for organising it, to Papa Lazarou for local knowledge and to everybody else for good company and good craic. I is well impressed with Plummers riding skillz on the rigid SS (right up to the wheel folding incident) and Derek Starship’s Soreen demolishing skillz. Innit. I was just glad I sensibly chose the full mudguards and a nice big bell option.
Keep an eye out for ‘Mr Sparkle’s Big Un’ ride and BBQ.

Lol the old woman and the bell incident made me chuckle

    old woman? bell? do tell

    Do ‘toll’, surely? ;0)

All the way round the ride I had had but narry an opportunity to ring my funky (ok, rusty) bell so, as we neared the end and I spied an old dear dithering on the kerb before plunging recklessly into the road, I thought ‘Aha!’ and, quick as you like, my right thumb got to work and a discordant tinkling noise rent the air. Needless to say the daft owd trout ignored it completely and blundered across the road anyway. I wasn’t overly surprised by this turn of events though and skillfully carved round her. She was then killed by a 40′ HGV with a HIAB on the back on it’s way to Inverness.*

    * This bit may not strictly be true.

Absolutely great run on Saturday folks. Lovely to put some names to faces. Apologies for being a bit of a mobile anchor for most of it. We all have our position in life. Mine is ‘dropping off the back’

Harry – you could have kept shtum about your first dismount. I was the only person who witnessed it. In fact, I just heard a crunch, saw you in a crumpled heap and thought “how on earth did he manage that?” 😉

Plumbers dismount was an altogether more elegant affair. His front wheel folded neatly in half as he was on the second to last step. Buckling down to completely folded-in-half to allow him to more or less step off the bike. I wish I’d have filmed it. It was majestic!

And you managed to get some youtube footage of me staying upright over some steep rocky stuff. Rarer than rocking-horse **** that is 😀

If I hadn’t managed to make a partial recovery on my last crap-fall™ I would have fallen through the chippy doorway on Ramsbottom High Street, sideways and still attached to the bike. I had another one at the gate on the way out of Cragg.

My knee looks like one of Stan Colleymore’s girlfriends and I’ve put a hole in my tights.

Derek my friend – I am eternally in your debt. I had it on my sausage butty yesterday morning and it is, as I suspected it would be, the Condiment of the Gods

Mr Sparkle I bow to your talents going up’ill on a SS. very, very impressive.

It was a nice pleasant stroll in the sun mate. I don’t think we could have timed the ‘catastrophic equipment failure’ any better.

As far as the rims go any of the Mavic All-mountain (XM) rims are that fair bit beefier, and a bit wider than the XC717’s. I opted for XM321’s and even my clumsy bufoonery failed to wreck them. Not the lightest in the world, but Hey ho, I’m sure lighter more expensive options are available. But I doubt you’d be getting a repeat performance of Saturday.

    Thanks for the info 🙂

I’ll try to keep my future rims in a vaguely circular shape
