Quite rocky in places, though a lot of the ride is on tarmac.

How rocky though? It’s that my mtb is a 6 inch travel job, sounds a bit much for this ride.

I don’t mind the odd rock or two.

Naa I was only joking 😆 You’ll be fine on a CX bike, certainly fine on a SS

No real rocks until half way point, these are loose and ranging from small pebbles to small babies heads, this is a climb and then a lovely descent.

Next rocky section is an uppy bit, mostly small stuff, then one other rocky downhill, mostly slabs with small loose stuff.

Now I have to report, there has been an awful lot of water damage from the rain over the last couple of weeks. Things I used to ride have become tricky/much fun.

Right. Following the removal of my parental duties this weekend, I’ll see you lot on Saturday.

MrsTollah will be at work BH 🙁
I’ll bring whatever bike is easiest to get out as I won’t be fighting with them all that time of the morning!

It’s fine on a singlespeed, one or two of the climbs are really testing and I didn’t make them last time I tried, but I *have* done the whole route SS before now

6″ travel will make the descents a LOT faster. CX will make the descents more, umm, interesting and challenging…

You forgot to mention its also a shonky piece of tat that weighs as much as a small moon, looks like someone attacked it with a skip full on anvils and rattles like a granny full of spanners. 😉

I might put my new uppy downy seatpost on to make my bike completely unsuitable.

Who was it that rode the Edale loop on the SS cross bike? Seriously dude you have lots of skill or bottle or both. I thought I was going ok on my Pitch when you passed me with a complete lack of respect for your own safety it certainly looked “on the edge”. 😉

Honestly, 99% of this route you can ride on just about anything. The only iffy bit is the top section of the descent into Buxton which is basically a messy rockery, though you can pick your way through it just fine. I’m a slow, technically inept rider and I’ve done it singlespeed, geared hardtail, 120mm full sus and 140mm full sus and all were fine, just varied a little in smoothness. You will be okay whatever you choose to ride.

It’s actually a really nice route on a singlespeed fwiw, one mildly steep climb that’s hard because the surface is mostly rubble and thus traction is at a bit of a premium, but that’s about it. Oh, and the first haul out from the stream, which is a pig on a singlespeed with cold legs… or for me anyway, but then as above, I’m slow and weak and ill etc. Blah…

    Some stupid nutter I think.

The Buxton Baby Heads descent is definately the most technical bit of the ride but there’s usually a smooth line through. Often next to the fence but does move round – so dont wear posh jackets or blame me if its somewhere else.

Going the guide book way round or figure 8 it to take in the track to Fernlee Res and over the dam?

Not familiar with the figure 8 loop – you mean from the White Hall centre, dropping over the ridge to Long Lane? Or something else? Been meanig to try that for years, and doing the old road through Rake End

    Mmmm.

We might come to this if there’s going to be some tandem action.

That’s if you don’t mind another couple of tandemists trying to steal a bit of tandemattention? 😉

It’s be great to ride with some experienced tandemeers and pik up some tips 🙂

Will this be the first official TURDS meet then?

    experienced tandemeers 😆 😆 😆

We’ve not even been on it for about six months.

So that’s perfect training for riding it in front of a large group of people then. 😉

I have to wuss out of this due to an infection. You’d all get fed up of waiting for me to return from behind trees and hedges!! The pootle would have become a dawdle. Have a good one.

nbt – figure of 8 is my way of avoiding a ride up from taxal. The main change over the normal route is: from Elnor Lane Farm take dirt track / lane and then tarmac to Fernlee. Follow A5004 N for about a km. Turn right just after sharp bend onto cart track, follow down to railway line. Then either N and then W over dam followed by climb to Oldfield and then S reversing the normal route to taxal. Down to ford climb out to A5004 and up past Shall Cross Hall Farm. Turn S at road and follow through to Fernlee. This time take road down to Fernlee Dam and either continue S on railway line to Errwood Res dam, cross and rejoin the normal route. Alt once back at Fernlee Dam repeat section back to Oldhall and then N through wood and onward on normal route.

White hall bridleway can be a bit wet at Whitehall and just before it drops back to A5004

There’s also the tie youself in a knot approach of doing Ladder Hill bothways. At Elnor Lane Farm, go to Fernlee, then Fernlee Dam, reverse the normal route to Taxal. Infact just reverse the whole route to Whitehall. Then take the bridleway W to the A5004, head N for about 1.75km and then head W on cart track to railway line by Res. Head N to Errwood Dam and follow the normal route.

Crikey – 5 pages and we haven’t even done the ride yet.

More energy is expelled in tippy tapping on a keyboard than riding bikes on pootles I’m sure.

    Anyone fancy doing the maths?

    STW server time
    + individuals’ laptop charge
    + lost work hours
against energy spent on a ride….

    which is more?

Sambob – Should be riding there, over ladder hill if faff doesnt get in the way.

Be warned. My back brake decided to wave two fingers at me this week. I’ve just bought a bleed kit and will be shortening my front hose while I’m at it. Anyone familiar with my gibbon-esque mechanical ability will realise what a high risk strategy this is the night before a ride. So…. expect the ‘can anyone lend me a bike thread to be posted about 9.30 tonight

Mind you, I’ve insisted on taking over driving duties from the Enigma in the morning, so we at least stand a chance of getting there some time this week

Hey chaps, I’m going to risk it and come playing too.

Will be first mtb ride since having bits removed from the knee 8 weeks ago. Can’t put much (any!) pressure through it, so might be walking at the back on some of the climbs! And descents too…….can’t risk crashing!!

I can’t make it unfortunately but was out earlier today north of Buxton and as said above there is a lot more rain damage than I expected

Ahh, yes, the fettling of bikes. I knew there was seomthing I had to do, we had a problem getting into granny ring last time we rode the tandem. Well, that’s tonight planned then!

Stanley, you bringing Mrs Stanley or is she on emergency rescue standby for if (when) your knee goes?
