I want to buy something from a user on Pinkbike, they seem legit and and responding to message, but the profile was registered the first time the item was put up for sale, and with little other personal details, i want to send money securely. They want the money through paypal.

how would they set up their account to allow for the buyer protection? i can add more money to cover the cost they will occur, but their account isn’t set to receive the money in this way. is it easy to change so it can?

You automatically get buyer protection if you pay for the item as “goods”

Just make sure you do’nt send them a “gift”

You don’t have to setup anything.

What he said – pay for a “Goods or Service” not to a “Friend or family”.

    Nothing more to it!

Yep- add 4% or so to cover the seller’s fees if they’re too tight to take the hit themselves and bask in the glow of buyer protection. Don’t send it as a gift (friends/family).

I tried that but his account wouldn’t accept it. Would it help if he sent me a invoice?

sounds pretty dodgy to me, can’t see that paypal would have a facility to allow this, did it reject straight automatically – ie straight away or did it reject after sometime – ie the seller themselves rejected payment?

There are some great people on PB but it also seems to be a hotbed for scammers…new accounts where the only activity is selling I avoid!

In fact I’m cautious of anything less than 12 months!

    Put a link up.

If their account isn’t accepting the payment. It could mean a number of things

    1. Their details have been entered incorrectly i.e email address, name

    2. They haven’t verified their account via email or verified their bank account.

    3. The email addess given to you is wrong.

    4. Their account activity is suspicious and the account is on hold.

One way out of this is to meet the seller at a convenient location so you can check the goods and then pay. Worked for me for more expensive transactions and safeguarded my money. Cash in hand still works. If he’s not up for it, move on. I’d be very wary as his PayPal account seems to have problems.
