I am traveling to Geneva between the 16th July and the 23rd July, my passport expires on the 4th August. The foreign office web site says ‘Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required’.

Do you think I should renew my passport before I travel, bit nervous of being stopped from traveling by some jobs worth type at passport control.

I’d get it renewed, some countries insist on it being valid for at least six months. Also check what the airline that you’re using (assuming that you’re flying) says. If they have a similar policy they won’t even let you board whatever the rules of the country you’re flying to.

A UK driving license will get across the border. You only need a passport for the airline. It’s the same rules as the EU. If you’re not a UK citizen then you need a passport, but so long as it’s in date then you’re fine.

Get the forms and post it this week. Wait any longer and it will be cutting it close and you might not have a passport to fly with!

    Phone your airline

Many wont let you fly on a passport with so short validity after.

As long as you have a return ticket you’ll be fine.

He’s going to Geneva, not bongo bongo land.

Glad its not me put it that way 😉

Common sense goes out the window when it comes to airlines they are remarkably inflexible.

Good luck – just tell the lassie at the desk – “jam bo on stw said it was definantly ok ”

For the sake of a phone call to the only people that will give a definitive answer

If its a valid passport, its valid whether it has 6 years or 6 days on it.

Plenty of time for a renewal. Do it now. Will be back within 14 days. I had a similar issue a couple of years ago with a trip to the US, where you need longer validity to travel.

My passport ran out the day after we came back from holiday last year, the airline mentioned it but because it’s valid they let me travel. On the return they weren’t bothered as we were leaving.

You can actually fly with an expired passport inside eu up to 2 years after its expired – by the rules

How ever the whole thing hinges roundthe airline and the dya of the week easy jet for example get alot of complaints as some of their desk staff insist on a 3 month validity after travel – and the next desk will wave you throw . Chances you takes innit.

I traveled to the us last summer with about a week left on mine. The nice chap at immigration mentioned it but no issues getting in or out.

IIRC Switzerland used to have a 3 month rule but checking the entry requirements this is no longer the case, and your passport need only be valid for the proposed duration of your stay with no additional period of validity beyond this required.

Alternatively the OP should change the wording on the inside of the front cover of his passport to read: “jam bo of STW requests and requires On the Pain of Weeing In Your Shoes all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hinderance, and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.” That would have done it. 😛

Why wouldn’t you just get it renewed, or are you a Scot that thinks he’ll save on buying a new passport after the vote? 🙂

According to ADP you only need a passport with 3-6 months longer validity that your trip for the following countries:

Brésil, Chine, Égypte, Île Maurice, Indonésie, Kenya, Philippines, Sénégal, Thaïlande et Vietnam

You’re going to have to renew it at some stage anyway, so why not renew it now and not have to worry about it? 10 years is so far down the line that a few months here or there won’t matter by then.

I’d get it renewed just to be safe, but I really think it would be absolutely fine.

You have one of the brand new ones? Oh. They’re not accepting those at Geneva at the moment…
