I'm going to be in a car next week for 6 hours with some people I don't really get on with (it's work related) – can anyone recommend an Audiobook for my Ipod? Never listened to one before so I'm open to anything. Love reading, but tend to hurl when I try it in the car….. Fave book = 'Money' by Martin Amis, but would prefer to listen to something I haven't read.

    Thanks in advance,

    C.

Go to podiobooks.com and get a copy of "In Search of Number 6" by Damon Timm. Funny, entertaining, free to download and it has got bikes in it.

Cheers J, that sounds just up my street I'll get it tonight. Any other suggestions, I've got 6 hours to fill…..

just finished all the 'no. 1 ladies detective agency' books. Very good books, and read in an extremely soothing botswanan voice.

Each book is about 6 hours.

Brideshead Revisited, read by Jeremy Irons.

There is a brilliant audiobook version of Hemingway's 'the old man and the sea' Was a bit cynical before listening because it's one of my favourite books, but the narrator's voice really fits. Think it's Donald Sutherland

Liking the idea of a soothing Botswanan voice – might be just the job as we're leaving at 6.00am, so I might get back to sleep. The idea of Jeremy Irons reading Brideshead sounds good too – never saw it on the telly and not read the book either. Not read any Hemingway, so that could be worth a look!

    Keep 'em coming!

i "aquired it" from "the internet" (i also have the original recording of the first transmission on casette though, does that help in my defence? :D)

anyhoo, i think a radio show would be better than some bloke reading a book at you?

    Podcasts also good.

At some point, it's likely you will *have* to talk to your colleagues….

Oh yes, what am I thinking – I'm not an audiobook virgin at all! I too have the original radio show 'Hitch Hikers', I LOVE IT! Listened to it as a kid in the early 80s(? could have been late 70s) on radio 4 with my Mum, then bought the CD set a few years ago. Still want something new tho..

And what do you mean Ourman? I think I can get through most of the day without talking to them if I try really hard.

Try Pies and Prejudice as read by Stuart Maconie, just about 6 hours and funny in places. Also Bill Bryson books go well on journeys

Even when squeezed together in a confined space? Impressive willpower, young jedi.

Yep, I think there's going to be 5 of us in the car…. When I said not talking, I mean nothing after the morning pleasantries have been taken car of. Other people aren't in my department anyway, don't speak to them (much) during a normal working day…. The challenge might make me forget about being squished in the back of a Pug 407 for 6 hours….

You can get all sorts of audio (and book) downloads for free at
    http://www.archive.org

The old time radio section can be fun. Stuff from 1930's to 1950's and some later stuff. Sound quality varies. Sometimes the adverts are left in and they can be bizarre and fun.

Also try your local library for audio books, most of them stock large ranges these days and most are on CDs. Abridged books from 3 hours, some unabridged go up to 18 hours. MP3 them or just take the CDs with you.

The BBC Radio adaptation of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman is very good IMO, I got CDs for a good price on Amazon (it was either 6 or 9 CDs in total, can't remember). There must be a download version available somewhere.
