I have bought a 2004 Patriot frame and was wondering if and what spec air shock I could replace the vanilla coil shock with?

Would it need a specific air shock with pro pedal?

    cheers

Hey, you neede to know the I2I and stroke, I think the older patriots ran a 190mm I2I with a 56mm stroke, those are your two starting points for fitting, you also need to remember that the dampening on shocks is set up for different types of frames.

If you send me over an email, I’ll help you out, including finding a shock and checking it’s function, my email is in my profile 😀

The frame will arrive early next week. I can then email you with sizes etc..

    Thanks for helping

If its the frame with the adjustable shock shuttle it needs a 215mm shock in long travel mode (standard). You can get another shock shuttle that reduces the travel and as kaesae says requires a 190mm shock.

The 215mm shock version is the Patriot 66 I think, wait until it arrives and post up a photo, if I’m not about just send a message, I have a lot of work on just now!

That said there are a lot or riders on here who normally pitch in with advice, I take your working on a new bike build, any chance of some photo ❓

If its a 2004 it wont have an adjustable shock shuttle.

If you can get your hands on a Vanilla RC (modern or old) or a DHX 3/4/5, I would personally opt for that over an air can.

    i2i should be 190mm IIRC.

    ( I use a coil on my Patriot ’00 )

Yep will be a 66 if its got the shock shuttle and 215mm shock, though I think they dropped the 66 branding at the end of the patriots life.

Sure I bought mine in 04 but it was an 05 bike if you know what I mean. Or was it 05 and an 06 bike 🙂

How does the patriot from 2004 compare with modern suspension frames? Also, is it designed for 150mm forks?

It’s a single pivot…. so you have to options:

    A. Only the 2011 frames with single pivots have the best design. All the previous years are inferior. So it will ride rubbish compared to Five/Alpine. So you need to buy a new one. Fact. (According to the marketing departments).

    B. It’s a single pivot design, very similar to the current model.. and so they ride 99.9% like each other. Without the massive 2011 price tag.

As for 150mm forks, yes, it will ride fine. Running 150mm Fox 36s (with quite a long axle-to-crown length) and it feels balanced.

I used to have a 2004 Patriot with 5th element coil shock (190 mm i2i x 50 mm stroke); ran it with a 150mm Marzo Z1 fork and it felt well balanced.

Thanks for the replies. I hope it is better than the old sub 5 i had a few years ago. Rear sus was good but 100mm forks looked very raked out though it did seem to ride ok, just had a slack head angle.

I am going full sus as my bfe was hard pushed to keep up with my mates at Afan the other weekend. Plan to run both bikes but might sell the bfe if someone wants to buy it.

I rode a 2004 Patriot last week with 150mm Fox36 Vans It was fantastic. I had 66 with 160mm coil lyrics and it was great too. I replaced it with the Cove hustler. The hustler is nice but does not have the bulldozer feel of the Patriot 🙂

I have a Manitou Swinger 3 190 x 50 that was on an Orange Five. It’s not doing anything at the moment so if it fits it could be purchased pretty cheap to get you on the trail – buy something better later if you care enough. I’m not saying a service wouldn’t benefit it, but it doesn’t actually need one – full working order.

The Patriots are capable frames, and a good bike to learn on or even for riding day to day, I would rather have a Giant VT or a Giant Reign than a patriot, but there are a lot worse frames.

If you have any questions about the frame just call orange and ask them 😀

I would use the frame numbers to find out the exact model and then ask what shock you should be running.

No point guessing when it easy to get the right info from the people who made the frame 01422311113
