Gvw limits for three series sprinters is 3.5t the base vehicle weight is iirc 2.3 tons leaving 1.2t capacity if it's a 4 metre wheel base model, and if it's a shorter wheel base the specs will differ. This is just what I remember from owning one. The 10 part means it has 100hp.

Some info here: http://www.parkers.co.uk/vans/reviews/mercedes-benz/sprinter/1995/technical-data/

GVW most likely to be 3500kg, although not guaranteed. Payload will depend on what sort of body you're talking about, anything other that panel van and there won't be any official figures, you'll just have to take it to a weighbridge.

It's about 200kgs, difference between the 4m wheelbase and the medium wheelbase van.

So long as its about 1400kg it will be fine. Its just a cheap van but its got to be better than my very rotten smokey powerless Transit

As above, any sprinter starting with a '3' - 308, 310 etc, the 3 indicates 3.5t GVW and the other two digits are an indication of the engines output - the bigger the number the more sprinty they are. So anything (at least any panel van) with a 3 and MWB or shorter will do the job. What you need to avoid is anything with a '2' (208 etc) as these are between 2.6 and 2.8t which even with a SWB is only going to give you 600kg or so of payload (after fuel and driver)

4XX and 5XX are all more than 3.5t and into tachograph territory

If its borderline don't forget that anything added after it left the factory isn't counted on the curb weight so bulkhead and ply lining (and a tank of fuel and you and your two burly mates) etc aren't factored in

Find the vin plate, possibly under the bonnet or in one of the front footwells/side of seat box.

The second highest figure is the GVW. Then take it to a weighbridge and get its actual weight. either free or cost you a quid or two depending on where you go.

Thanks again I will look for the vin when I get there I just wanted to make sure it wasnt a wasted journey its only 30 miles or so but still a pita if the van cant carry enough.

You may want to die when VOSA pull you into a weighbridge and inform you that your 2800kg van currently weighs 4000kg...
