Mine is on. Just got a whole new system so it’s going to help balance out the cost rises- not sure exactly how it’ll fall. I’ve stopped thinking of it as a normal everyday cost and started thinking of it as being basically a luxury, like an expensive bike, and in that light I just bloody want to stay warm and cosy- but then I’m lucky enough to be able to afford it, and I’m basically heating 1 room.

Not putting the heating on – how’s it going…?

I’m in Southern England and it’s not October yet so same as any other year.

I can see my breath tonight.

Legs have been going numb with the cold these past couple of days too.

    It’s not even winter yet.

I stuck mine on last night for an hour or so, just to take the chill off a bit.

    Things I’ve noticed:
    1. Washing up is surprisingly annoying now, as it’s impossible to roll up my sleeves when wearing so many layers
    2. I have a LOT more warm top layers than I do trouser layers
    3. I’m taking a weird satisfaction in the challenge
    4. I’m doubtful how much longer that will last

My OH got in at 630 pm after spending all day doing archeology stuff outside. Got rained off eventually but the main contractor sends shitty emails if they clock off early. So they hung around on site in wet PPE, as far as I can tell.

She got home drenched, cold and knackered.

I put the heating on and did dinner.

We’ll be carrying on as normal, the direct debit was increased to £241 before the reduction, based on last years consumption.
It’s now dropped to around £150. I’d budgeted for the increase, so the extra is going on the mortgage.

I’ve replaced a few uPVC window hinges, insulated the loft hatch and fitted a new letterbox.

It’s 16°C in Pembroke tonight. Bit windy but very mild. Windows are open but will have to close at bedtime cos the curtains flap too much.
I’m in shorts and a thin jumper with barefeet in a Victorian terrace with tiles on the kitchen floor.
There are still many steps to go before the heating goes on.

Quite nippy the last couple of mornings in SW Edinburgh. Have had a couple of short heating boats mainly for the towel rails. Still in shorts and long sleeve top.

The wife says we’re allowed the heating from tomorrow 🥳

We’ve been putting the log burner on in the evening for the last week though.

I’ll be skipping the October 1st target and putting mine on at the dawn of the age of Aquarius just to really wind up @Trail_Rat

When the moon is in the seventh house, that’s when the heating goes on in this house.

Urrm.. I’m not sure you fully understand the laws of thermo-dynamics, and to be fair, niether do I.

Weather is gash here so we can’t dry clothes outside. Mrs A demanded heating on and then wanders off, forgetting that she had turned off all the rads due to problems earlier this week where it transpired that we couldnn’t switch the heating off. Well now we can. And turn it back on too- for what I’m uncertain now that all the rads are locked down. Grr.

So I’ve lit the woodburner instead.

Mines been on all summer, not sure if it has actually led to the rads heating up yet though. Thermostat set at 17°C.

I did wear long bibs on my commute the last two days so it is getting colder!

OH cracked yesterday while I was out. Telltale plume from the CHB vent as I came in

A lot of people implying that it’s the women who cave first. Not in my house. Mrs OS is always telling me to put another jumper on rather than the heating – even before the price hikes. She’s on a proper mission now….!

It’s going to be a long cold winter I fear…🥶

Ok, so with the heated dryer experience that…. We had a duvet over it yesterday which did indeed reduce the drying time. However, determined to prove it works(!) Mrs K came home with the actual matching cover for it yesterday.

Made of some kind of more insulated materials, it goes right down to the floor and after 2 hours I put my arm in to what was a toasty airing cupboard type of feeling. Clothes are estimated to dry in about 3hrs. So £96 spent to save half the tumble dryer cost, I reckon 60 washes and we’re even 😬

Set ours to go on for the first time last night – all underfloor, so heat the floors up using Economy 7 night power.

We cracked yesterday afternoon – Madame has been unwell and with rain yesterday it really got to her – can’t see it going off until March now!

Not really needed ours on yet, East Yorks, trying to make it through to 1st of Nov but if it gets really cold then it’s going on. I did grow up in a house that had metal window frames, single glass panes with no heating other than a coal fire which only went on at 5pm so perhaps I’ve got used to it.

getting washing dry is starting to become complicated

Drying washing has always been a problem. It gets put on the clothes horse in the sunniest room with the window ajar. At night we have to put the dehumidifier on, which must surely use a lot of electricity.
But hopefully it can still dry outside (on sunnier, windy days) for a few more weeks.
We’ve decided to wash clothes on a 30o setting and not wash so often (too many people wear an item once, then pop it in the washer).

One more tip: I’m a curtain maker and having a long curtain on the inside of a front door, fully lined. preferably with thermal lining and/or interlining too, will make a big difference to keeping the heat in.

Yeah we have a front door curtain on a portiere rack (Google them). 100% recommended.

Also if it gets cold we have a curtain on a temporary pole that covers the bottom of the stairs, keeps the downstairs far warmer.

Yes and no, yes they use a lot of electricity. But it’s still more ‘efficient’ than an electric heater as you’re taking the latent heat out of the water vapour. So for every kWh you put in you get more than a kWh of heat out.

Not got heating on yet though I have put a throw over the legs the past couple of nights. It did get warmer in my flat last night when the rain started.

Interested in the heated dryer Kryton57 as this is the biggest issue I have is drying clothes in winter and being reluctant to use the condenser dryer. At the moment I do exactly what Bunnyhop does and put the clothes horse in the sunniest room.

We do that too, with 2 kids and all their PE/Sports stuff we have a lot of washing so now have 1 x non electric airer for stuff we don’t need soon, and the covered heated one for stuff we need sooner. FWIW, this mornings wash was cupboard dry in 2.5hrs which at 330w is 975w used or £0.33p roughly. Our condenser tumble dryer is 2600w and takes 1.5hrs but of course not heating all the time so estimated from the smart meter at £1.10 per load.

Mrs K bought this and this. She knows the store manager spoke got 20% off the airer. Aldi do them for £30 if you can get one.

We’ve had a heated airer for years. We use a king size sheet over it which seems the best compromise between breathability and insulation. It’ll dry a full load overnight and keeps the room it’s in slightly warmer.
I’ve never done the sums but am convinced it’s cheaper than a tumble drier or having the heating on unnecessarily.

Other than when the CH guy tested it for the boiler service, heating hasn’t been on since March. We did cave somewhat last night, and put the duvet back in the duvet cover. 😁

Blankets being deployed when sat on the sofa. Heating set to come on for an hour morning and night @17c. Trying to get some warmth into the fabric of the house to save on so much energy later in the year.
Solar PV going in before the new year so that will help with maybe an oil rad or 2 for heat. That will also help with gas usage as we’ll have some energy diverted into hot water.
Will sink the savings into the mortgage.
