Seriously, I have been uping my travel every time I get a new bike, gone from rigid ss, to 4 inch hardtail, 5 inch hardtail and now have a 6 inch frame with 7 inch forks, what is wrong with me!!

It just feels right, where will it stop!

Yep, I can't justify it at all, I do ride drops and stuff, but don't need it, no one NEEDS a bike though do they?

6" frame with 6" forks here – love it. Thing is, it might be overkill for some things, but it's the most versatile type of bike – I can happily ride it on Alps DH or easy pootles and have ridden it to work before now.

Who cares. Ride what you want. Too many people on here worry about what they ride or about what other people ride. That's what you want? Bosh! Go for it.

Plus One for all the libertarian views here before the travel Nazis get their oar in.

150mm front and rear for me also, but also with the option of increasing this to 160mm if I want.

I also ride a ti hardtail though ;o)

Here here to the 6inch travel brigade: better to be over-biked than under-biked. I have never ridden a bike as much fun as my Banshee Rune.

I've ridden a 7 inch rear, 6 inch front bike xc round the (flat) new forest quite a few times. Bit heavy, but bloody great sitting & pedalling over bumpy bits.

I've ridden a rigid bike there too, and a 4"x5" bike, and a too-small hartail with a big fork. Guess what, they were all fun

Ya! Let's start a revolution! Riding mine for everything!

I took the 160 mm forks off my HT for some 140 mm Pikes.

    Big mistake.

160 mm forks are well and truly back on to stay.

I'm rocking a whole 130mm on my mmmBop at the moment – just waiting to unleash that extra 20mm.

It's certainly faster over rough terrain than my 100mm Ti hardtail. Enjoyment with that is of a more cerebral type.

Thank f@ck finally sense prevails! One bike for everything,( except my retro hardtail of course) but otherwise it's my tuitus el guapo for everything!

It doesn't matter… So long as you look forward to riding whatever you have then it's all good by me.

Besides, my 6" bike pedals far better than my 5" bikes does…

I've got a HT and a SS both with 100mm forks; and a FuelEx with 120mm rear and 100-130mm U-turn fronts. These are perfect for most of the riding I do.

However, have just come back from a weekend in Exmoor and while I can see what fun that would be on a big forked hardtail like a 456 or BluePig; conversely I'm not sure that going to a bigger FS would make the trails any better? I think they'd remove some of the challenge and the fun.

    IMHO, of course.

+1 for riding what you want. I have a 5 spot I ride most of the time but on occassion get the Bullit out just because I can

I've been riding my Uzzi in the 7" setting around local trails, and it's been a lot of fun. I occasionally take my wives fully rigid bike for a spin, but lately it's been more of a laugh.

I did work on it a bit to get it to work well on trails, but now it's fantastic. I can keep up with friends riding 5" bikes just fine.

I do have a second heavier wheelset with dual ply tires for more rough use. This allows using light tires and a lighter wheelset (light wheelset = flow rims with 2.4" Fat Alberts).

The uzzi currently weighs about 32lb's with the trail wheelset, and over 34lb's with the heavier wheels.

Recently gone from 180mm front and back to 160mm… cant say I noticed much change in the suspension but I noticed the change from 43 lbs to 32 lbs

I ride a SX Trail 2008, its getting on for around 40lbs. Its alot of fun, quiet happy riding on my own on it or with friends when we are messing around. However it is rather an issue on all day rides, although its more the weight then the travel.

The only time my 5" FS really feels wrong is on lots of smooth trails when I hanker after the sprightly HT. But as soon as it gets really choppy on the HT I start wishing for the chunkier FS!

    We're not over-biked, we're over-optioned 😛

[rant]Over Biked is a meaningless term. If you were always perfectly biked you wouldn't be able to push any harder and if you were under biked you would be at risk of injury or bike failure. I think most of us are overbiked, I mean how many people can go to the limits of what the bike is capable of? How do you even know when you have gone over? Does it just explode?[/rant]
