So I fitted a lovely new SRAM PC1170 chain to my XO1 11-speed drivetrain, before the chain wear indicator got past 50%. Shifting is flawless, but under power, it’s making grinding noise that just doesn’t feel or sound right. Any thoughts. or similar experience?????

If you believe Sram then they say that you need to change your chainring(s) and cassette every time you change chains.

That’s mental. I know plenty of people who have changed the chain and kept chainring and sprockets… that SRAM spokesperson isn’t living in the real world. I only changed it to preserve the sprockets!!!

Is it making noise at the chainring? If so, the chainring needs replacing.

If it’s elsewhere, then need more info.

You don’t need to change your whole drivetrain when you replace your chain. If you keep on top of your chains and replace them at .5 – .7, then you’ll be fine for ages.

That, or just run the whole drivetrain until it dies. That’s probably cheaper in the long run.

Seems to come from everywhere, but only when I put a bit of power through the pedals. Shifting is spot on though – crisp and quick up and down the block. Never had anything like this happen before, but then every other bike I’ve ridden since 1989 has been Shimano equipped…

Well, I changed the chainring and everything was fine. Shifting great across the cassette, no grinding noise.

You have got the narrow and wide parts of the chain sitting correctly on the jockey wheels which are narrow wide and if you get it wrong you get the kind of noise that you are experiencing . Failing that you probably need a new chainring .

Just had exactly this on 2 bikes – both x01 cassettes. changed the chain and no slippage on either cassette or chainring but grinding under power.

Its the chainring – Annoying as it wont look worn (mine was only 2 months old) but if you run your finger over the teeth you will find there is a ridge and the teeth are a tiny bit thinner than new. This causes grinding noise on new chains.

you can either put up with it until the chains stretches a bit or buy a new chainring like I did. then it goes back to silent.

It is annoying but the expensive bit is the cassette so worth it I think – started buying superstar chainrings since it seems I will be replacing them regular.
