My neighbours sit in deckchairs in their garden smoking fags all day. In summer my windows are open and it stinks.

Shame there’s nothing I can do to inflict the same on them really. I’ve tried smearing dogshit over the fence but that tends to smell just as bad on my side.

We got it coming through the walls too. Had a word. It stopped.

My only issue with legalising weed is the smell, because it really isn’t nice and does seem to travel. In one of our London flats we used to smell it a bit due to the neighbour upstairs – and that was in a very solidly built Victorian property.

Create positive air pressure in the house. You’ll need a carbon scrubber (filters out the smells) and an inline fan. It is what some growers do to contain the smell to a room in a house. But it sounds like your house is full of holes, so it might not work well.

Where I previously lived it was every other house smoked it. You could only smell it if the wind was in a certain direction and you were stood outside. Are you sure they are smoking it and not growing it as well? That creates a very pungent smell. 😉

Surely smell is covered under various anti-social behaviour and pollution laws, like noise? Or am I mistaken?

Positive pressure is a good shout!

You can always spot the stoners and smokers on threads like this even before they admit it.  Immediately defensive; there’s nothing wrong with it, get over yourself, have a smoke yourself etc etc.

Ever wonder that it might perhaps be less of a problem for everyone else if you weren’t so selfish and self-righteous about it, and instead showed a modicum of consideration for others?

(Disclaimer: I couldn’t care less if someone wants to have the occasional toke, it’s the prevailing attitude of some which stinks much more than the smoke.)

Neither stoner nor smoker and regularly drug tested. My stance? Get a life.

Speak to the guy by all accounts, have a polite word. But involving police and whatnot is just going overboard as is the passive smoking paranoia.

Cougar, seriously? You DIDN’T expect those replies? How long have you been here again?

it depends what kind of person it is, it might be enough to go round and simply point out that the people can smell it down the road.

I bet you wouldn’t say that to his face (or mine), Mr Internet Hard man.

Anyway. Have a chat with them to see if they will help out, the police don’t give a shit about someone smoking weed in their own home.

Get a massive air blower wind machine thing,. Then you’ve got the added bonus that you’ll then be able to all get dressed up and recreate 80’s hair-rock videos in your front room

I have to say Binners that pure genius. We need more Hair Rock the way the worlds going nowadays.  No-one wants to be a terrorist when they can become famous by getting a perm, wearing spandex and blasting out power chords.

Don’t listen to all these bloody snowflakes with all their ‘pop roundand have a chat’ nonsense

Go gangsta on the’ asses! Killing your neighbours in a frenzied bloodbath then burying their bodies in a shallow grave on the moors would be an entirely proportionate and justified response

    that’ll learn ‘em!

I have the same problem as the OP. Skunk smokers next door and over the back. It stinks and it winds me up as it’s flagrant disregard of the law. At weekend, me and Mrs S had to retreat indoors as the smell was so minging.

If I approached my neighbour about it, he’d fillet me with his cock such is his level of psychosis (probably related to his heavy weed habit.)

Like a lot of stuff in this shite country, we’ll just have to put up with it.

I bet you wouldn’t say that to his face (or mine), Mr Internet Hard man. Just grow up and start thinking of other people than just yourself.

    Why not?

Why would that make you really angry?

Have you got a few issues?

It tends to be the other way around.

    Really?

Stopped smoking about 25 years ago.

I have smoked weed about 3 times in the last 15 years.

I can’t believe that people would go to the police or the “authorities” about someone smoking weed in their own home.

As I said before, get a life. (Sorry if that makes you want to kick my head in).

Get some pointing done on your walls as well, the mortar must be shagged.

gobuchul – weed is Class B and therefore illegal.

Remember the guy smoking it isn’t doing much wrong, the OP on the other hand has a crap house and an hypersensitivity to stuff which is much worse.

There are 2 ways to look at life, you let everyone get on with their stuff or you consider others with what you are doing. Much prefer the latter</span>

Are you sure it’s not going out through one window on their house and in through yours or they are smoking outside? If genuinely through the wall either your wall is proper shagged, you are living next to a farm or you are exceptionally sensitive to smells. Last option is possibly phantosmia and you are smelling a phantom smell that isn’t there.

Can you smell other stuff through the wall? Burnt toast or strong cooking smells? Pot is not that strong a smell; no stronger than those I’d say.

Typical bloody stoners! If you’re going to break the law, then at least show some ambition and aim higher

Coke and hookers is surely the minimum requirement?

Weed is, I can smell it on people as soon as they get in my car, tobacco ect not nearly so much. It lingers aswell so I keep a can of neotrodol for when they get out. Saying that I’d bet the OP’s neighbours have no idea he can smell it in his house.

so what i can gather from all of the above, is i’m sad, hypersensitive, smell phantom smells, should get a life and live in a crap house. So if i  talk to him,and nothing changes, i just have to sit in my crap house, subjected to smoke/smells that are forced onto me by stoners that dont work and sponge off the system, because hey ho thats life.

I have no problem at all with what they do in their own house, but why should i tolerate something forced onto me in my own home. How is this any different to playing loud music. Is it upto the person not playing the music to soundproof their home?,no i think not,or are they sad for not liking music and oversensitive to noise?

sometimes STW can be ace, but not in this instance.

Not enough swear words to be classed as a rant. I did like the sponging off the system bit though but needed more vitriol 🙂

    All in all 4/10.

Crimestoppers offer an anonymous crime reporting services but I’ve no idea how effective this might be (I’d guess that the plod would be more interested if there’s growing or dealing).

Someone I worked with a few years back had a very similar problem and there’s a huge amount on the internet from people in similar situations.

Do you know if the property is privately owned or rented?

Were you looking for reasons, causes and suggestions and methods to help you or were you just after a stroke on the head and tea and sympathy? We are not your neighbour; we are not your local plod. We can’t stop them smoking and those with some experience estimate that the police won’t come to your aid either. You could bury your head in the sand and just moan about it or you could look to see what options you have to change the variables you have some control over (like looking at your wall). What exactly were you hoping for?

I have no problem at all with what they do in their own house,

    and

by stoners that dont work and sponge off the system

I think you might have a problem with what they do in their own house.

You might have to yes. If they decide to not give up the weed, you escalate and the police and council aren’t interested (it is only people smoking in their own home) you’ll be stuck with the situation.

For reasons of self-preservation the human nose is extremely sensitive to the smells of smoke and rotting meat and it can detect even the tiniest concentrations. I can certainly smell if the driver in front is smoking tobacco or dope and sometimes even if they are wearing perfume.

If you want to be less than social about it there are some options….

if there is a particular time of day when it is strong and you have a pay phone nearby call the emergency gas leak line and inform them of a funny smell….

wont stop anything but you might feel a bit better for s short time….

Someone explain the wall thing to me? I don’t get it.

Our end of terrace is 140 years old and made of cheese. The neighbours smoke (fags) I can never smell it unless they are in garden. Is everybody’s party wall falling down?

Personally don’t mind the smell of weed. If we smelt it in the house my wife’s 50 Yankee candles would soon put a stop to it.

You need to get down to pound stretcher, and buy all the bottles of that ’80’s’ perfume called ‘Poison’ and chuck a bucket full or five on their property. You might, however, fumigate the whole county !

Sorry OP, i have nothing to offer other than repeating, ‘go have a chat with them’. This is, after all, the normal considerate and (hopefully) standard behavior.

Through an open window I could believe, through walls, and very strong – are you sure they are just smoking and not growing?

I wonder if Polly is on to something? This is quite an interesting read – https://www.theguardian.com/society/shortcuts/2013/oct/15/spot-if-cannabis-farm-next-door

Smell Follow your nose. A cannabis crop takes about three months to produce. During the final four weeks, the plants stink. Earlier this year, Crimestoppers helpfully issued cannabis-farm scratch-and-sniff cards to 210,000 homes in the UK to help you identify the exact bouquet.
