    Muse +1

Coldplay and U2 not really critically acclaimed enough to count as overrated IMO (they are crap though).

Got to be The Beatles hasn’t it? Never had one of their songs stick in my head, apart from Here Comes the Sun – which doesn’t really count because it was a George song (and he is underrated).

………….and TJ failing to understand this is all subjective, yet TJ spouts as carved in stone fact.

Problem with all music threads is a lot of it is about taste and opiniion. No hard facts.

    🙂

Having a listen to van halen now. Nothing in there that seems anything special to me.

To be honest TJ, and don’t take this the wrong way, it is irrelevant what you think. The fact is that he is one of the most influential guitarist of the last 30-40 years and DID inspire a whole generation to pick up the guitar and play it in a new way.

MF – spotify. Listened to to part of the first two albums ( the tracks acclaimed in the spotify blurb), now listening to the greatest hits remasterd.

Mikey – I really think you overstate the case. Compared to people that really were influential like Clapton, hendrix, les Paul etc. EVH did not carry a worldwide across the board influence in the way they did did he?

Oh – I don’t take that the wrong way of course – but you are giving your opinion as fact 🙂 Its all opinion.

I have learnt something tho – they were around earlier than I thought they were

Have you listened to the solo that is eruption then yet?

Yup – and listened to it agan just now. when was it recorded? sounds like a lot of stuff I heard from the mid 70s. Clichéd and self indulgent. Sounds very like clapton as well to me.

It is not my opinion, but the opinion of the majority of the guitar world. Personally speaking, I prefer the playing of Randy Rhoads and Tony Iommi, but having spent most of my youth reading guitar magazines I can see just how much influence he had.

Hard rock/metal guitar playing was not the same before EVH.

I would say that EVH influenced just as many people to pick up the guitar as Clapton – that is my personal view, based on experience.

    *sighs*

guys, really, even I can do passable van Halen guitar ****. most of it is just a bunch of arpeggios and scales, with a bit of bach thrown in every now and again. it’s intricate, but technically it’s not *that* hard. It’s showing off.

good music has never been and never will be about how many notes/min.

Mikey – did his influence ever extend beyond the genre?

Eruption that MF suggested – teh opening chord is a straight steal from Jailbreak. Most of it sounds like Yes from the mid 70s to me ( although that was keyboard)

    Hugely underrated, ABBA.

+1. The Best Pop Baynd Ever.

Thing I like about ABBA is the lack of pretence – no claim to be anything but a pop band having fun playing simple songs.

No but it’s true; they were ****ing brilliant. I grew up with Abba. They form part of the soundtrack to my life.

Stop playing to the gallery, go to the back to the room and face the wall! When you’re ready to play nicely I’ll consider your request.

    Beatles innit?

See, I was right all along. Why anyone is foolish enough to question me, I really don’t know…. 🙄

How does Emsz know how big or small our willies are? 😯

    emsz

average sized willies are slightly larger than the median elf, so most blokes have slightly small willies

    Awwwwww, didums

good music has never been and never will be about how many notes/min.

Before you play two notes learn how to play one note – and don’t play one note unless you’ve got a reason to play it – Mark Hollis

Can emsz see our willies..??? “ohh stands back in shock”

Then you may like my attire:

Today I’m mostly wearing budgie smuggles, complete with a leopard print and “pl*yboy” logo, small gold bow tied neatly on the top right of the smuggler.

They’re a bit baggy for me and I could do with changing.. The ride in was kinda warm, I suspect looking out of the window, the ride home will be moslty damp and warm.

Mark Hollis applied those pricipals to the letter, especially with his singing….until he faded away entirely. Bless him! (love him to bits BTW!)

Back to Van Halen – I am not their biggest fan (although I did love 1984 when it came out and nearly lamped my girlfriend’s little brother when he sat on the sleeve on the day I bought it) but Runnin’ With The Devil is a stand-out track by them.

Mr E Safety may not be the tallest elf alive, but even at my most boastful I’d struggle to claim that my, er, appendage is bigger than him.

but TJ how many of the guitarists you mention have a Guitar Hero special addition named after them?

You see old boy, the youth of today will grow being influenced by the likes of Van Halen, from computer games and although you may hate to admit it they wouldn’t make a game to sell millions of units based on the dull and dreary chaps you list. 😆
