Minecraft for a 6 year old

My 6 yr old son is keen on Minecraft. For Christmas I’d like to setup a way so he can play, appropriately limited for his age. I think the best way is to have it installed on our PC. I know nothing about the game, so if anyone can advise on the best way to do this I’d appreciate it!

I’ve set up our 7 year old recently. I got Minecraft for Windows from the Windows store, rather than Minecraft from the Mojang store, as you get both bedrock and Java versions that way.

Easiest way to restrict is set your kid up with an email address and then sign in to Minecraft with the that email. You then set the restrictions through the Microsoft family safety website

We’ve got it on a Switch rather than PC, and it’s very much locked down. Unfortunately I can’t actually remember how I did so, but iirc it was a really easy part of just setting up the account when we first got it (it’s all through Microsoft)

My lad was a similar age when he started with Minecraft. He always preferred it on iPad compared to the PlayStation version as it was easier to navigate with small hands.

We steered him to the builder game rather than the fighty one although it’s all pretty tame to be honest. The only online stuff he did was with his friends. He’s 10 now and doesn’t really play it these days.

The device options we have are PC, Amazon Fire tablet and a slight curveball as I see it will run on a Raspberry Pi.

Does anyone know if the Amazon Fire tablet version is the same as the PC/Linux one? Can I buy a licence and have access on all platforms?

I originally bought the PC version via Microsoft / Xbox store. I have since moved to Linux and the licence ports as you can still sign in with Microsoft account.

However the licence certainly doesn’t work on the Android or Switch versions. So by extension I would assume would not work on Amazon.

I’ve blocked online play for my little one. Otherwise no other restrictions, the fighty version is not overly violent and not at all graphic in my opinion. Littleun prefers to play in peaceful or creative modes. 11 year old playing for past 3 years, for reference.

I’ve been through this recently.  I’ve set up a server on a mini PC using the docket deployment at https://github.com/itzg/docker-minecraft-server

I’ve it set up to be in peaceful/creative mode and with a seed that has a bit of diversity. You can do thinks like turn flight and the nether off. I think the latter might have caused some bad dreams ??‍♂️.It also allows you to add in plugins so the server works on java version and the iOS bedrock version. It means that I can play with the lad, through the same login, on different devices.

This brings back memories….

Mine got into minecraft at about age 8 (now 21), I was so impressed when at age 9 he set up his very first VPN!  I’m not sure if it’s still the same but back then to play multiplayer with his mate required them to both be on the same LAN, a VPN was the workaround.

My 6 year old started playing it at 5 on the switch. I kept it in creative mode. He plays on the switch. It can’t go online.

He then started watching you tube videos on how to play it and they all play in normal mode so he’s seen it all. I missed that bit!

He prefers creative mode as its unlimited and he can practice making things. I struggle to play it with him now as he is so good at it and im rubbish.

The problem now is the you tube creators have grown up so he will watch 1 mine craft video by some one called Preston for example then the same channel will have slightly more grown up stuff on which he wants to watch but I won’t let him.

You’ve got to be on it! And watch them.

Amazon Kindle/Fire/Tablet thing + World of Cubes/Planet of Cubes = Minecraft for six year olds.

Only let them watch Youtube Kids, not Youtube unless supervised.

Ooh, STW Minecraft thread… I have questions.

My daughter plays it (Mojang version?) on her Kinde Fire. Two things:

1. She hasn’t set up an account with Microsoft or anyone, but plays it but in both her Kindle profile and the parent profile. We need to get her off the parent profile as it inevitably turns into unlimited time – any idea how? Can we set up an account (tried a Microsoft account but there was a blocker which I forget), sign in, associate the worlds then wipe the parent profile? Or, do we just need to create an account and start again?

2. In her main world, she got lost in the jungle and can’t find her way back. Anyone been in this situation and found a way back?

Switch FTW then the whole family can also play Mario Kart and the myriad other awesomely fun games that are age appropriate for 6 (and 46) year olds!

We need to get her off the parent profile as it inevitably turns into unlimited time – any idea how?

I did that for my daughter what seems like a decade ago now. It meant her and her friends could collaborate in a locked down environment.

Yes, once all kids are old enough we will get a Switch or similar. Unfair on the youngest currently as they aren’t quite there on being able to join in (we have old Nintendos and have tried Mario Kart)

I asked my son, he says you need to build a base with a bed, then when you die you just wake back up in bed.

Without the bed he says he thinks you respawn in the general area where you first started the game, so if her base is near there you should be able to find it again by dying

@theflyingox – she put her bed down when she was already lost ( lolz )
