Maxxis 2.3 aggressor on 30mm internal width rim?

Per above I’m just thinking about swapping out the (massive draggy) 2.4 WT dhr2 back tyre from my Bird Aeris for my usual summer tyre which is a 2.3 aggressor 3c exo.

Since I ran it last year I’ve changed from a 25mm internal width rim (e1900 Dt wheelset)to a 30mm one (xm481).

Will this tyre be ok on a rim this wide or am I better off looking for a wider back tyre to run for basically 2-3 seasons of the year? Aggressor dual compound 2.5wt?

The bike is basically used for trail centre and uplift stuff so exo tyres have always been tough enough. It’s just so draggy with the current back tyre on it’s killing me (Especially as the hardtail I’ve been riding is so fast in comparison)!

I’ve just put a 2.3″ Griffin on my E1650 rear (30mm EX511 rim) and it fits well, not noticed any real difference from the EX471.

Right now I have a 2.3 tyre on the front and 2.2 on the back (but Schwalbe rubber – no Maxxis).

Yup, used a 2.3 aggressor on an Easton ARC 30mm rim and it comes up with a real nice profile.

Between myself and my riding mates I’ve noticed some 2.3 maxxis tyres are hit and miss, the Agressor, Shorty, HR2 and DHF seem to work well, but the minion SS and DHR are both too square and the side knobs come into contact when riding in a straight line.

Maybe I’ll just stick it on once I’ve bought some more Stan’s and see how it goes then.

2.3 aggressor will be spot on. I’m running a DD version on my 145 with 30mm E1700 wheels and profile is great, still round enough, but with great support. If your gonna run exo, I’d be tempted by the 2.5 wt version for a bit of extra traction, but gonna drag a bit more than the 2.3

Running one at the moment (2.3 on an ARC30). It’s great. Pretty fast, plenty of grip, predictable, and nice breakaway. Will get you a picture shortly. Cracking tyre IMHO.

Sounding better and better and I already have the tyre so nil cost other than sealant to change. The 2.5wt looks like it’s the best part of £50 so I’m quite happy not spending that!

Ran a 2.3 Agressor DD on my Hope 35Ws no problem.

I run that exact tyre on that rim on my aeris 145 and it’s excellent. Paired with a DHF front it works great at trail centres in all conditions with great climbing traction and nice, predictable breakaway.

The 2.5wt looks like it’s the best part of £50 so I’m quite happy not spending that!

I’m going to give the tyre I’ve got a go based on above feedback but the 2.5wt version of the same tyre is my backup. Would prefer a lighter tyre to a huge one though

Personally I’ve never had any issues, although not always the quickest to post, so dont order if you’re in a hurry. Saying that I ordered one on Sat and it’s due to me tomorrow

I rode a DHF 2.5wt front/ Aggressor 2.5wt rear on my Reign last summer on 27mm rims. It was a great combo, aggressor was low drag and had decent grip in the dry. As soon as the weather turned wet and muddy it didn’t have the best traction.

I think I’ll probably run two dhfs as my summer set up this year for that reason.

2 Dhfs will be quite draggy won’t they – especially in 2.5wt size?

I find the aggressor 2.3 is pretty good until it gets slushy (greasy is fine). I thought the 2.5 is meant to be better in mud than the 2.3 though.

Well I’m currently running a shorty wt front and dhf wt rear, both in 3C maxx terra as my winter set up and I would say that the rolling resistance is surprisingly decent. Certainly a lot better than Magic Marys IMO. But thats a matter of perspective, I normally run aggressive tyre set ups.

The 2.5 aggressor is better in mud to an extent, but because it has the same closely spaced tread pattern as the 2.3, it’ll still quickly clog up with mud in muddy conditions.

If you’re comfortable with the aggressor and it suits the trails you ride, then I would just go for the aggressor.

I would go for a 2.5wt on 30mm rims IMO, the 2.3 will become too squared off and can affect the grip when leaning over, plus the lack of sidewall protection will expose your rims to more damage (Don’t ask me how I know).
