Looking for good wet weather/mud tires

I’ve given up riding on high rollers in the mud bath that the UK is now, looking for a good set of mud tires/wet weather tires to ride on since It doesn’t look like the Americans will stop testing their weather machine on use any time soon.

Just need a good set nothing to expensive under £50 for a set preferably 2.3″ or 2.4″ Thanks.

Not sure if you can get them in 2.3+ but I loved my bonty mud x’s. Just wish they made them in 650b flavour

I had a set of Maxxis Medusa’s. Great for the mud, a nice wide block design to stop the mud from sticking.

thelonebiker – what’s a Medusa like on the front? I’ve always figured them for a rear only tyre.

Specialized Purgatory 2.3 and good in wet and most mud.

I now have Medusa’s on the back of two bikes they have been great in the mud, but I think that is more to them being 1.8″ rather than a magic tread pattern ( although that is also very good I guess) they really have made a difference this year.

I’m a big fan of the 2.25 Beaver. Works very well in mud but is a decent size and works well as an all-rounder. It’s not a one trick pony like most mud tyres IMO.

After a few trips skating around on the mountain I have stuck the High Roller on the back and a triple compound Muddy Mary on the front. It is fantastic in the wet/muddy natural stuff but hard going on roads/gravel/trail centres.

Schwalbe mud sharks are ace. Shame I only have them in 26″ 🙁

Been running Geax Datura front and rear for a few weeks now, very good in mud, roll pretty well on tarmac and set up easily ghetto tubeless, am very pleased with them so far, seem to be wearing well too.

Conti Baron would be the obvious answer but too expensive for the good ones. Worth it IMO but I don’t like bursting people’s budgets and the cheap ones are probably gash. Like voodoo on the front. Onza Ibex is a cheaper one but not convinced it’s as good, seemed to lack the bite- only had a brief ride on them so that’s maybe not fair.

Combo of a specialized butcher/purgatory works well, neither is a mud tyre, they’re just tyres that do mud. Has to be pretty grim before a butcher stops working- good wide tread so it bites but also clears decently. And the Purg is a bit faster.

wordnumb, I had the medusa’s on the front and back. 2.1 Front and 1.8 back. I found them spot on! Gripped well and definitely shed the mud well. I’m not sure how well they work on wet rocks and roots. There was a few bad reports on MTBR.

I had Storm Control’s on, but pretty narrow at 2″, did cut through, but had a tendency to wash out on the front I felt.

Now running 2.3 butcher/purgatory tubeless combo, know a couple of others who are too and rate it as a reasonable all year round set up, neither are true mud tyres, but don’t think you’ll get much that is in 2.3″ or 2.4″

I’d been ummming and ahhing for ages as the high rollers weren’t cutting it and you can’t yet get mud x in 650b so my choices were limited. After hearing mixed reviews of mounting beavers to tubeless rims I’d set my heart on magic Mary tryes. They’re not light in the slightest but the OH bought me the trail star TL supergravity version for my birthday in jan and they are well and truly phenomenal. I can run 25 psi and they still feel hard thanks to the sidewall. They’re 2.3 so not ridiculously narrow like mud x. They can cope in the wyre forest mud and when they loose grip they don’t squirrel and slide they just loose it predictably. I wouldn’t run mud tyres at a trailcentre, there’s no point for the surfacing but as they were a job to fit I didn’t wanna remove for bike park wales so I ran them. I wasn’t hanging about but it wasn’t til we got home that we remembered I was running them and they were faultless in the conditions there as well as the mud at home. James has now sold his mud x and bought the same tyres he bought me!

Maxxis Beaver 2.25 (29er), are working well for me (tubeless setup) but don’t come in within the OP’s budget.

and I have a basically new set in the garage dumped after a couple of rides, I’d suggest you try some decent tyres 😉

Should be I’ll go check (seriously), they (or it) been in there a while and were used with a tube so might need more sealant to start with though.

Another Datura user here. Great in the mud and slop, good on roots, not great on wet slick rock unless at really low pressures. Tubeless too and I got them dirt cheap at On One and I’ve been really happy. The big test will be the Fort William enduro next weekend…

Best for mud performance – panaracer trail rakers – rugby boots on a bike. 2.1 front 1.9 rear. Sod comfort the grip is incredible – on mud – roots best avoided?

Very good and tubeless but not quite as single minded – bontrager mud x. Very good mud grip and not bad on roots either.

For racing in the mud – maxxis beaver. Bit less tread, very grippy rubber.

All come in 2.1 max with the exception of the beaver which is newly 2.25. If you want a wider mud tyre that’s the only one but it is not as high performing as the other 2 in actual mud.

Another vote for Panaracer Trailrakers. A bit draggy on fire roads but most excellent for mud and slippery Other Bits.

you can get Maxxis Medusa’s in 2.3 – not a light tyre by any stretch, but great for the muddy downs.

BTW, i run Medusas front and back in the winter.

I have just bought some very light use second hand mud x for my SS mud plugger and they are brilliant. Not wide but hey if it’s truly as muddy for you to need mud tyres to keep riding then you ain’t going to need wide tyres. Run them tubeless so no pich flats.

My front is the first to change when it gets sloppy, and as a good all-round winter tyre I’m liking the panaracer CG soft condition. Cheap at wiggle. A bit flimsy, although saying that i’ve only had 1tear, shame they dont do a tubeless version. Great tyre with big volume (hans dampf, fat Albert size).
Rear tends to stay as nevegal or conti Mk. When its really muddy, geax datura.

MBUK group test winner (in the copy I was bought as a gift) was Specialized Storm Control, make of that what you will

Depends on what type of grip you want.

I currently run a supertacky high roller on the front and a pumped up hard trailraker out back.

The high roller grips as well as anything I’ve ever tried for steering and control grip, whilst the trailraker just digs through most mud to the compacted stuff underneath when you pedal. The trailraker is very ‘pingy’ on roots and rocks, but in my opinion this adds to the fun!
