Gym and 25 minutes on the treadmill last Tuesday, left knee a bit achey that evening.

Eased off with a bit of yoga Wednesday.

Did 25 minutes on the treadmill Thursday, no pain or discomfort while running, but the knee definitely got worse that evening.

Couple of hours on the road bike Saturday – again, no issues while riding, but knee worse afterwards.

Knee looks a little swollen, pain below and on the inside of the kneecap, eases when moving, much worse after sitting down.

Any ideas? Stick with RICE therapy or pester the physio (who specialises in running/exercise rehab, handily)

Knee osteoarthritis – like me you’ll need a new knee.

    Don’t use treadmills.

Hopefully it’s the tracking of the knee cap

There is a muscle called the vmo. It can get lazy and not fire causing the patella to stop tracking

Googling found this. I have sorted this out on my own a couple of times

Based on second-hand experience with doctors,

    You need to lose weight.

NAD, but it took me (and a lot of money for private tests, scans and a consultation) to learn I had a biomechanical fault with the position of my patella (patella alta). Having investigative surgery in Jan, outcome of which will determine if I need another more significant operation to reposition my patella.

Physio can be a black hole ( a doctors words not mine), a scan can also identify other faults (that aren’t even causing you pain, and likely won’t even need anything doing) so also aren’t always recommended ( a physios words not mine..)

The reality is if you’ve only had this a while it’ll probably settle, with a restriction on heavy loading in the interim. RICE is considered old hat now I think, but ice and heat alternating can be very helpful.

If it continue for 6 months, I would try and get an MRI

I’m going with some form of muscle or tendon type tightness that is pulling asymmetrically on your knee

I say this as I had a long term knee pain problem that I couldn’t shift. Turns out I had an overly tight piriformis muscle. Once identified it was fixed within 20 minutes of exercises

It comes back occasionally, it’s directly related to too much sitting, and I noticed you mentioned sitting making it worse

I was told I’d done all sorts of nasty things to my knee but I had no memory of any trauma or accidents. It just started. It came back during COVID lockdown as I was sitting about a lot. Apparently it’s pretty common

same here, mine started in Sept 2023, after a bike ride–I have tried physios (3 so far), plus now lined up for an MRI (an x-ray showed nothing), so I am always curious to see when knee issues come up here what folks have to say on this, my issue is soreness at the back of the knee, top of calf, sometimes shooting pains, othertimes more hamstrings, no idea but it’s a nuisance and can get me down–on the bike is ok but I usually pay for it afterwards…

    Yeah, hence the treadmill

Blimey, your knees must be wrecked then!

I had similar symptoms plus the occasional grinding and clicking. MRI revealed a meniscus tear with a flap that kept interfering with the joint movement, hence the grinding. The most regular way I felt the pain was either standing up as I got out of a chair or climbing 2 stairs at a time. Basically going from the knee bent to about 90 degrees and then straightened.

I am having an op to remove the flap and generally clean the crap out of the joint (arthroscopy) a week on Friday so hopefully that will work. I asked if they could do it under local so I could watch and take photos but they insisted on a general anesthetic.

My gran had a leg pain, she went to the doctor and he said “it’s your age.” She shot back, “well, the other one’s the same and that one’s fine.”

    Yeah, hence the treadmill

Running before you can walk? 🙂

If you’re carrying a bit of timber, running is relatively high-impact on joints. Better shoes may help, or swimming, (heaven forfend) cycling or the other stuff you’re already doing. I’d lay off the running for a bit if I were you.

    I had Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Least worst cause of knee pain – physio exercises sorted.

But get a good sports physio to diagnose before making any assumptions.

Also POLICE is the acronym now – optimum loading replacing rest
