Lace hook repair in lined boot

The lace hooks on my Grisport walking boots kept bending, so I kept bending them back. They've now reached the point where I think they'll break off very soon.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to replace these without damaging the lining (ideally DIY, but I wouldn't rule out sending them away)?

I think that the original problem is that the hooks are just too thin, so would be keen to find some stronger replacements.

Any hints for DIY repair?

Boot repair companies like Cheshire Shoe Repairs  or Lancashire Sport Repairs will do that if you decide to send them away.

LSR quote "£23.00 first / £10.00 each additional".

Thanks

“£23.00 first / £10.00 each additional”.

Hmm... I would like to replace all 8 (4 on each boot) but at that price it would be cheaper to buy a new pair of boots 🙁

All sorted for £4.25 🙂

I gave up on trying to preserve the lining - if it had been through stitched, I would have un-picked the seam to gain access, but it was blind stitched.

Removed the old hooks with a bit of brute force:

It didn't damage the holes too much:

I had to make a new hole through the inner - a leather punch might have been better:

The new hooks and rivets:

The rivets were easy to set using a brass drift and a hammer:

The heads of the rivets are quite slim, and sink into the lining quite nicely:

Job done! 🙂

Re LSR: I sent them a GTX jacket to retape and they completely screwed up. Rather than remove the tape that was falling off, they just put new tape over the old tape, which then all fell off as soon as I opened the bag. £45 for a total waste of time.

With the exception of stapling the new tape on, its hard to image someone doing a worse job.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole....

I've had issues with LSR in the past (boot resole fell off within a month - but not their problem as I'd waxed my boots which means their glue doesn't work).  No such issues with Feet First Resoles in Chesterfield.
