New(to me) Fargo frame just arrived(thanks Merchant-Banker). Need to buy kit to put on it. Likely to be drop bars, triple mtb chainset(possibly 48T rather than 44T), MTB cassette.

So the question is, with Roadie STIs, what works?

    1. Shimano 9 speed, road front mech, road or mtb rear mech good?
    2. Shimano 10 speed, road front mech, road only rear mech good?
    3. Sram 10 speed, what goes with what?

    Cheers

I have Shimano 105 10speed sti shifters, with a Shimano XT 9 speed Rear Derailleur (the new ’10 speed’ mtb derailers wont work with sti’s!!!) and a 10 speed mtb cassette.

Just went to fit my 105 STIs to a 9-speed XT rear mech and realised- no barrel adjusters anywhere in this picture! So, might be something to consider.

I’m using 9 speed tiagra sti shifters and an old deore lx rear derailleur with an ancient xt front, works fine.

Shimano 10-speed STI. Road front mech. 9-speed MTB rear mech.

I have cable adjusters on my frame. 😆

It’s got one for the front but not the rear- original 105 mech had one built in.

sorry i have to view these threads without images due to work security..

assume images above show inlines? I was merely sugguest they would be an idea.

Oh, no- no pics, just saying I know that’s how you fix it. Only mentioned the whole thing so that the OP would know it’s something to be aware of really

i didn’t even take that into consideration when i bought all my gear, luckily i had inline adjusters.

Thanks all. 10 speed STIs to 9 speed MTB mech looks to be the combo I’ll go for depending on bargains turning up. Frame has adjusters on the downtube stops.

I successfully use a 9 speed mtb front mech on a double with 10 speed stis – works great for me. I have heard others struggle with this set up though.

shimano front mtb mechs aren’t meant to work with road sti…and IME, they don’t tho a few claim otherwise!
