I,m slowly get weaned on most of these drinks
http://www.hawksheadbrewery.co.uk/prod_list.asp?catid=26
They're no Hop back, Stonehenge, Dark Star, Plain Ales, Downtown or Mikkeller though, are they?
(Last one is a bit of a trick, as he doesn't have a brixks and mortar brewery. The tequila or red wine barrel aged black is astonishing, though! Seek out the Monks Elixir Cranberry at all costs!)
Jennings are a bit bland really, I think there are better breweries around.
Badgers are worse, not a fan.
Tent up then off to sun inn pooley bridge for a pint of sneck lifter 😀
Cranberry? In beer? NO!
Bland? BLAND????? That's subtlety you philistine!!!!!
Sam Smiths FTW
You've got less chance of people agreeing on a brewery than a bike brand.
Sam Smiths for the cheapest pint in york.
Liquid, try it before you dismiss it. Simply astonishing.
Harviston FTW
Best brewery for standard beer here in west yorkshire os Timothy Taylors I reckon. But there are loads of interesting breweries knocking about. Sammy Smiths is ok, but a lot of their pubs let the ale turn to vinegar before serving the stuff. Agree that Jennings is bland, except for Snecklifter, of course. Beer is good, thats the moral of the story.
TJ, Harviestoun is good ale, but since they were bought out by Caledonian they taste the same. Still decent though. Now Brewdog are an ace Scottish brewery. Got a new pub in Edinburgh I believe.
Agree with Brewdog, fantastic beers, bit strong for sessioning though.
Wye Valley make some fantastic beers, everyone a gem, especially Dorothy Goodbody's Wholesome Stout... Until recently my favourite stout. That was however before I tasted Hardknott's Dark Matter, so dark that light doesn't pass through...
I live in the same town as the Jennings brewery...I went for a weekend away in Yorkshire and was gutted the local pub was a Jennings one!
The Coniston brewery ales are much better in my opinion.
Not fond of brewdog. Bitter and twisted is my fave beer
Batemans...no contest!
If your lucky enough to live in Yorkshire or Lancashire then Pictish is where it's at.
If your also lucky enough to live in Bradford (things you never thought you would say!) then Saltaire Brewery is worth a trip on the last Friday of the month 🙂
Jennings - just average at best 😉
So many to choose from!
Badger do some wonderful Summer beers in Golden Champion and Golden Glory. However some of the Theakstones brews are hard to beat.
Obviously I'm not going to be as "niche for niche sake" as some...
Bitter and twisted is akin to a hop soup with a dash of vodka added. Not pleasant ime. Each to their own though.
Wasn't that impressed with the Brewdog stuff I tried either, decent enough but nothing special.
I'd sooner have a Hobson's Town Crier.
I used to work for Jennings so I may be biased but I really love a Cumberland Ale or Cocker Hoop. Superb
Badger really is not very good at all and I come from Dorset. IMO The Black Sheep Brewery in Masham is the best. If you had desert island beers then their Black sheep would be the one.
there is just such a choice right now, so many beers to choose, so little time.
as a session bitter Salopian's Shropshire Gold takes some beating
Shropshire Gold is a very good beer!
If you can find it though, the best session ale is Hobson's Twisted Spire, only 3.6% but loads of flavour.
Too much choice at the moment. Jennings wouldn't be in desert island beers though. Not bad, but nowt special...
Saltaire Brewery is of course not in Saltaire. It's in Shipley. But aside from that, their Cascade Pale Ale is very nice.
Leeds Brewery Pale Ale is also very nice.
Copper Dragon (Skipton) do a nice "Golden Pippin" which is nothing to do with apples.
And the other Masham brewery's Old Peculier is amazing at the brewery tap itself
Sneck Lifter..... love it, wish it was easier to get down here. Oh to live in the Lakes..... one day maybe.
Sharps Doom Bar also gets my vote.
Maybe I like both of these cos I first had them on holiday in great pubs 🙂
I was in a pub an hour a go, that had shropshire gold and doom bar, I had four pints of shropshire gold, and I really like doom bar.
Coniston Bluebird FTW.
Out of my way out of my way....
Right.
There can be no such thing as 'the best brewery in the UK', as they're all making lovely healthy nutritious beer, what is good for you and that. So, we need many many breweries making lots and lots of lovely beer.
One brewery simply cannot produce enough beer to go round, so we need loads of them to quench our thirst for this wonderful energy drink.
What a preposterous statement to suggest one brewery is better than any other. Ridiculous, and indeed, blasphemous.
Two which are worthy of an Onerable Menshun, in my onion, are these:
All breweries need our support. Drink British.
I really like doom bar.
It is possible I may well have had a few pints of that lovely beer tonight...
Copper Dragon"Golden Pippin" is a little cracker
But for me Moorhouses "Pride of Pendle" hmmmmmmmmm
I like the Witches Brew too
Witches Brew though superb makes your back legs give way, but from the bottom up !!
there is no 'best brewery' this country is blessed with many great ones.
marble, meantime and thornbridge are my current favorites (amongst others) this changes week by week.
make room.. Far Yarkshire's Finest... Timothy Taylor a brace of Landlord followed up by half a dozen Golden Best will make our lass more attractive than 8 gallon of Nivea ever could
The nicest Saltaire (Shipley) brew is Triple Chocoholic. And yes, the 2 quid a pint Friday is ace!
Doom Bar. Lovely stuff. It's no Eden Ale of course, but I think it just has the edge on Tribute as far as south western ales go..... but then what about Butcombe?
MrSmith.... Lord Marples is a fine drop from Thornbridge
Bowman Swift One. Try it at the Hampshire Bowman.
John drummer
If ducati can call there Shipley shop the Leeds branch then Saltaire Brewery aren't pushing it too far 🙂
If you Bradford lads haven't tried the Sparrow Bier Cafe then make a trip soon..
fair point. Like Evans "Leeds" is actually in Castleford. WF postcode, Wakefield council, non-Leeds phone area
Yeah, been in the Sparrow a few times now, it's great for interesting American beer, trouble is most of them are dead strong and before you know it, bubbles are being blown. 😆
Jennings isn't my favourite brewery, but it's nice enough and reasonably priced too. I like to buy a few to support them as they had such a bad time in the floods last year - I hope they're back on track. For Southern dwellers, Morrisons is the most reliable supplier for a pint of Snecklifter.
Shere brewery - Shere drop is lovely. +1 for darkstar as well. I'm also quite fond of TEA from the hogs back brewery and my local, Harveys is quite good too.
Kelham Island brewery - Easy rider
Saltaire brewery- Blonde
Abbeydale brewery - Absolution
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord
Everard's - Tiger
thristy now 😛
Badger is one of my favourites, I reckon.
Wychwood is pretty good too.
And while Charles Wells probably isn't niche enough for the likes of STW, you can't beat a nice pint of Bombadier, or for that matter their Banana Bread beer or a nice glass of Waggledance.....
Mmmmmm! Beer...
Oooooh, Theakstons.......mustn't forget Theakstons.....
Ringwood Brewery fan over here 🙂
Had a keg of Ringwood Best at our wedding.... happy days!
Hawkshead Brewery make some beautiful beers too.
Thwaites Wainwright are my personal preference at the moment...
SA Gold isn't bad either, or Blacksheep, not forgetting Doom, Shropshire Lad, Bathams....
feel a sicky coming on and spending the day in the Nags, pity I'm skint. 😡
If you can find it though, the best session ale is Hobson's Twisted Spire, only 3.6% but loads of flavour.
I bought a couple of bottles on spec on a recent trip to Worcs. Absolutely superb.
I lover the sheer variety of beers available, and the fact that standards are being raised all the time.
I grew up in the next village to Hooky. I still have left an single unopened bottle of their Shining Light, which was brewed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of my school.
Now, however, living in Lancs, my two favourites are from close by:
Southport Brewery - their Golden Sands, Sandgrounder and Natterjack are superb. Served in my local on regular rotation.
and
My true favourite is Prospect Brewery of Standish, with their Silver Tally and Blinding Light being possibly the finest beers I know. Link to vid of Oz Clarke and James May visiting the brewery
Oh, and honourable mention to Phoenix Brewery of Heywood whose Arizona is quite magnificent.
Long live British brewing..! 😀
Jennings - best brewery in britain +1. - I'm biased though.
Cumberland cream - if you can get it is gorgeous.
London Ale alert - I was in St John's - Archway boozer, on Sunday night and they had Cockerhoop on tap. woop .
I had two whole pints. 😯 😀
Next fave is that Timothy Taylor landlord , followed by that Doom bar stuff . I now fancy a pint - may have to take half a day!!
Bank Top. Thread closed.
Another good call.
Shame beer is off my #idiet... 🙁
All interesting beer'idge..
But..
THe Flower Pots in Cheriton (Hants) brews the best beer "like eva"
You all clearly know nothing
Wye Valley
Thread closed
Bridge of Allan Brewery, near Stirling gets my vote.
The beer's excellent, they open late if we ask them, and they don't care how muddy we are. They even sell dog biscuits.
You all clearly know nothingWye Valley

Yes, the Butty Bach is very nice - but Best Brewery? 😕 Not convinced.
Thornbridge is pretty great too.
Black Isle Brewery
My parents got me a mixed case of their ales for my Birthday, every single one was exceptionally good.
Bathams brewery is about a mile from my house. Craddocks is even closer and nicer,
Do tell me "informed ones".. Why do breweries call their beer(s) such stupid names?
Butty Bach? Qui?
No idea...but imo Wye Valley don't make a bad pint, even their ltd editions are great
20 years ago this would have been a much closer competition because there wasnt as much choice and so much of it was utter crap, now just about anyone is producing half decent beer.
As to what part of the UK can serve a decent pint of beer, that is a different matter all together IMO. IMO West Yorkshire and the Pennines is the best place to get a decent pulled pint.
I work over the road from Pardoes.
Ashamed to admit I've not been in since I started here 7 months ago!
"If you Bradford lads haven't tried the Sparrow Bier Cafe then make a trip soon.."
Just googled it, and that would mean having to go in to the centre of Bradford though 😯
Micro Breweries are abumndant in Hants and if you take in West Sussex (herumph) and Wiltshire too then you are bombarded with choice.
Long may that continue IMHO..
Oh and Bakeries too, they seem to be popping up all over the place..
Next we'll be growing our own veg and planting Olives..
You Northern Folk need to remember who saved your arses so you can create your horrendous brews
Kent - Beer Savior of the free world
I'll agree with the OP. Cumberland Ale, Cocker Hoop and Sneck Lifter are all superb.
My wife could tell that Cocker Hoop was from the same brewery as (her favourite) Cumberland Ale because of the "pure water" taste.
There are other nice beers of course.
Do tell me "informed ones".. Why do breweries call their beer(s) such stupid names?
A lot of people choose the beer on the name on the clip alone. A long time ago, I worked in a brewery and we produced a little something called Pigswill. Sold very well, as people liked the name. In other cases, there's something personal about a brew and the name comes from that, or perhaps there's a historical/local link to it. Either way, a good/funny/interesting name sells a lot of beer.
My current favourite is Tryst Raj IPA
Looking forward to trying many of Scotlands best shortly 8)

(Watches onion's video clip. Weeps tears of joy)
Beer snobbishness/facism/parochialism is stupid. Everyone has different tastes, and it's fantastic that we live in a nation which produces such an incredible range of beers. Go to other countries, like Spain f'rinstance, and try to find such beer-o-diversity.
I always like to try 'local' beers whenever I go to other places. Had some right lovely stuff, and some not so good pints, but beer is good.
To say that 'X brewery is best' or rubbish like 'ee the only place where you can get a good pint is Y', is just daft.
As to what part of the UK can serve a decent pint of beer, that is a different matter all together IMO. IMO West Yorkshire and the Pennines is the best place to get a decent pulled pint.
See? Codswallop. Every area could claim that.
Beer is one of the few things that can help unite us in this nation, and we should celebrate it as we should celebrate all forms of diversity and choice.
Williams Bros. Obviously
Going to Eastbourne Beer Festival at the weekend, will look out for some of the above, some of my current and all time favourites, and I make no apologies for a US ale, splendid summer beer.
Harvey's of Lewes: Best Bitter, Copperwheat
Brewdog: Punk IPA, Hardcore IPA
Sierra Nevada: IPA, Torpedo
We really are lucky to have such a wide range of great beers in this country. Apart from Belgium, I can't think of anywhere else that comes close.
