Just come across the post, Good to see some other model aero enthusiasts on here !

Ive been flying for 40 years, everything from Heli’s and gliders to large jet turbines models. My stepfather owned a model shop when I was in my teenage years so I spent my life been paid to build kits, mainly Tamiya and Kyosho cars, but Heli’s and planes occasionally too.

What are your current favourites in the hanger? sounds like you’ve had a fair variety of airframes.

I always wanted an RC plane as a teenager. Now I could afford it, but not sure I want to bother. Might inspire my own kids a bit though, maybe.

The hangar is a bit empty of bigger stuff at the moment, I sold some of the bigger stuff off when we moved in late 2019 and didn’t really replace as the BMFA limited flying club use around lockdown.(And cancelled the BMFA Nationals)

There are a few EDF’s in there and some slope soaring gliders, Multirotors (DJI Mavic, Mini 2, F550 and S550 with Naza V2’s) and come combat wings.
I haven’t flown as much since covid but got heavily into the FPV stuff, both multi rotor and fixed wing. Fixed wing FPV is great fun but could get a little naughty as the laws were tightened around “Drones”. With long range gear (1.3ghz video & 433mhz radio) in the right airframe flights of 50+ miles are achievable.

My Stepfather is a member of the Large model association and him and Mum travel to model shows all over Europe and the US. His hanger is full of large scale warbirds

nice! which do you prefer from the havoc & skysword pair?

your stepdad’s stuff looks serious to say the least

The Havoc flies really well, almost like my old Jetlegend Hawk. The Skysword was bought at the Hobbyking stand at the 2018 Nationals for £85 as they were on offer. It flies okay for what it is, but I wouldn’t have another.

The Stepdad sold the model shop in 1995 and retired to a life of building and flying models. he has built and flown hundreds over the years, then sells them on.

I’d love to have that level of building skill. And the time to do it!

All the warbirds are scratch built from plans, the turbine stuff is moulded airframe then kitted out with relevant kit, either Graupner or Jetcat turbines, Spectrum radio gear, but he will not use any stabilisation unit unlike a lot of the turbine guys.

The stepdad has been modelling for 70 years so is quite good at it ! Whilst I have had some nice stuff over the years, I haven’t got the same amount of cash to risk!

Looks like many hours in the finish alone on the turbine airframes I’d bet. Plans built warbirds at that size are a whole another level of woodwork before getting the paint out.

Many hours, often a couple of years on the plan builds, but that is what keeps him ticking.

Then weathering the paintwork with an airbrush to add more scale realism.

@pacemaker75 – some absolutely stunning models there. I have a few really nice scale planes but none I have built myself yet. My glider obsession is growing though so most of my flying funds are being sunk into those at the moment.

I would like to put together a really nice P47 though at some point 🙂

There’s loads of warbirds I’d love to make/fly. But I’d need to get a mk1 Spit out the way first.
