anyone from cannock or live nearby ? was planning to move by next year when the kid go to uni, I only need to be in a spiting distance of cannock chase and walking distance to train station even in a bad weather , these 2 is my only priority, at the moment I am considering this area in red circle, I saw some houses in right move within this area in the red circle that is detached in 200k and semi detached for a little bit less which is fair and lovely, my only concern is I have no idea if this area or nearby is a “chav” territory(I hope not). opinions/advise i will appreciate. thanks

Hmmm. I live within the red circle. It’s ok-there’s good and not so good like everywhere.
If you move that circle a tiny, tiny bit to the left, some new houses are going up right there just off the Pye Green Road/Belt Road. They look good and there are trails right behind them. About a mile to Hednesford station. I prefer Hednesford town to Cannock for some reason, it’s got a couple of ok pubs and more curry places than you need. Cannock Chase district perhaps wouldn’t be high on everyone’s list to live in, it’s often not on mine. But the riding’s good on your doorstep and you can get to Wales/peaks easily, Brum for city stuff is a doddle by train.
    Where are you moving from?

Hi Si, thanks for the reply.. I will be moving from Coventry which is I have no idea why I am here, there is definitely nothing here, and got tired driving to cannock every weekend, twice if it is a very good weather. I notice some area within the red circle has detached houses which I fancy now, not so keen on new houses I understand it is a sensible choice with its very good energy rating, bu I am living in one now, very warm house but felt like I am inside a box of plasterboard..something like that

Penkridge is nice to the west of m6. Station there and 10 mins to birches valley.

I’d also recommend having a look at Penkridge.

Huntington is a hidden gem. Most of the venture capitalists and investment bankers live there and the property prices are very reasonable.

We lived in the Etchinghill bit of Rugeley for a year and a half and had no problems, just a quiet family occupied cul-de-sac really. Being less than 1km from the chase was definitely a good thing! Plenty of other nice little places around as well though. Are you still commuting to Coventry? I used to work out by Ryton-on-Dunsmore and the time in the car did start to grind a bit…

Another vote for Penkridge, but then I’m biased ‘cos I live here. We can now never leave, because nowhere has a bakery as good as Jaspers. Nowhere.

    It’s pricier than Cannock, though.

If you add a jet wash, benches and a giant tea urn to your home, it will pay for itself in a few months 😉

Can you get battered chips in Penkridge? Or is this just a Wolvo thing?

I must confess to never having had cause to find out…

Another vote for Penkridge, still feels like a village, has a station, handy for A5 and M6 and as already mentioned has Jaspers.

Penkridge also has a good market on a Saturday that has a cake lady who does excellent riding fuel.

Red circle looking like Chavsmoor. Probably nicer than some parts of Coventry
    O:)

Penkridge is safe but dull, the ride up to pottal pool can get boring and it’s a bit of a rat run with toss pots driving too fast.
Rugeley is another option, it’s like Cannocks poor relation.

My house is in that circle 8)

6-7 years ago I’d have said no, but it’s really picked up recently. Assume you’d be looking at the new builds there? To be fair, the houses round there can be judged largely on their appearance if it’s a nice looking house 90% of the time it’ll be in a nice area, if you’ve got some specifics feel free to email them to me and I’ll let you know (email in profile).

FWIW, I’ve lived there for 12 years, we’re looking to move now, but not far, I love the area. The Mrs grew up in the circle and made us move back there when we bought together. It’s handy enough for work (I cycle to birmingham every day) I can do a lap of the dog from my door in less than an hour, and crime is low. There’s also a tesco, aldi a wetherspoons and a costa. What more could you want.

Actually, fancy buying my house? 😆

Then you should do, forthwith! Battered chips are yum. You’re not far from them, just nip down the 449.

I’ve just read the rest of the thread, agree penkridge is nicer, but it’s more expensive in every way. Houses are more, there’s a train to brum but it’s out of centro, so a million dollars for a season ticket and of course it’s a long ride to the Chase.

Etching hill is nice, but joins on to a not that nice bit of Rugeley. Slitting Mill is the pinnacle, but you’d be lucky to find a semi there, let alone something under £200k.

Edit- there are also a few places to get battered chips 😉

    location..location..location

thanks all for the reply and locations suggested.. it is very helpful and will be looking at these areas carefully and do my homework, I do still have and need a lot of time to sort this out I dont even know how the timing going to work with selling house here and buying there

@prawny I am looking at google streetmaps in that red circle area, why are houses different to each other? .. I saw a very nice one in Abbey Street, but seems strange as it is the only nice(ish) looking house in that street (detached with gate and all that stuff)

Penkridge I will google this later and see where this is in relative to chase forest, I really need to be at the doorstep of the chase if possible.. … I can live without Pub or curry house or others.. I only need tesco tbh 😳

Slitting mill is ace, I really like that area.

    how about haywood/little haywood?

    prawny

The Haywoods are nice, but a bit too out of the way for me, it’s a trek to the station from there if that’s a concern. Also, I’m not 100% sure if it’s on the mains gas either, so you’re also unlikely to get proper broadband and that.

Another thing that might be of concern, you can’t get cable in the Cannock area, but you can in Rugeley.

I’ll have a look at Abbey street and come back, not sure where that is off the top of my head. I think a lot of the houses were built in small blocks when they knocked old ones down, there used to be a lot more terraced houses about down in the middle/south side of the circle.

Edit- looked at Abbey street, not far from mine at all, I think that is an area where there were lods of miners houses, I think the large patch of green to the west (now being built on) was the pit, and there were a lot of crappy small houses there. They’ve been knocked/fallen down over time.

The area banded by the 4 roads around the circle is OK. Thornhill Road, Rosehill, West Hill Avenue, Greenheath Road, Station Road, Bond Way are good IMO. Hednesford Town again is fine – very nice feel to the place and a couple of good pubs and restaurants.
Avoid anything to the north east of Bradbury Lane.
Penkridge is nice and has a lovely village centre but what people aren’t telling you about Penkridge is that it not convenient for the M6 – it is cut in half by it – passes between the high school and village – it is in a cutting but it is noisy.
Huntington and Cannock have a mix of good and bad so choose carefully if looking around there.

Oi, It’s not all bad off Bradbury lane 😳

Fletchers, Evergreen Heights, Wenlock View and Greenwood park are all pretty nice. There’s that one there that is proper crappy though, but I doubt you’d be buying a house down there off right move.

Please note Penkridge is on the prevailing windward side of the Chase and it’s more or less guaranteed to be raining there when it is simply cloudy all around. If it’s gonna rain it’ll rain in Penkridge. Fact.

    phiiiiil

I can’t say I’ve noticed Penkridge being any wetter, but because of said prevailing wind I do notice the ever present headwind when riding back from the Chase… 🙁

From Penkridge it’s less than ten minutes to the M6 in either direction; that’s convenient enough for me.

Since they got rid of the concrete surface on the M6 and with the prevailing wind you hardly hear the M6 now.

You can get fibre in “The Red Circle” but definitely not in Norton Canes, so worth checking the postcode checker if that is important.
