iPads – WHY are they taking over the world?

to coin a phrase ‘Why can’t we all just get along?’
Most do, just somebody decided to put on inside a walled garden to try and lock in consumers 🙂
samuriFree MemberDo you have slanging matches about which brand of screwdriver/toaster/pen/dvd player you use as well or this only reserved for computers and phones?
Anywhere geeks gather to be honest. Go to a coffee forum, or a petrolhead forum. Everyone thinks they’re right and everyone else is wrong.
Except me. I know I’m right.

There’s a correlation between how much something costs and how much people argue about their choice of product. Invest a lot of money in something, and you’re more likely to justify and defend your decision.
It’s interesting that the OP got his iPad for free – no money invested, no incentive to look past the problems.

It’s not always about the money though is it? What if that product works and integrates with whatever systems that are currently in place with minimal down time or compatibility issues that any price differentials are insignificant compared to time wasted getting something to integrate or managing workarounds?
I don’t need to justify my computer/phone/tablet choices as they are effectively made for me and changing them would be utterly pointless and counter productive.
I do question the wisdom of £1k laptops for surfing the Internet and the odd spreadsheet though.

I thought we were discussing iPads?
MrSmithFree MemberYes that is the topic of discussion apart from where I mentioned phone/laptop/tablet but that’s because I see them as part of an integrated system.
aracerFree MemberI must be missing the “works and integrates with whatever systems that are currently in place with minimal down time or compatibility issues” bit then. Though helpfully people do seem to be providing workarounds.

What’s also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products.
I’ve never heard anyone claim ‘Macs never go wrong’ but they do score consistently highly in reliability and customer satisfaction stats, and professional reviews of their products are generally very favourable. But that’s all due to brainwashed ‘sheeple’ I suppose.
mikewsmithFree MemberWhat’s also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products.
It seems to correlate to the number who answer any question with Apple
What toilet iFlush
what cooker iCook
etcgrumFree MemberYou’re one of the worst culprits TBH. It’s like people feel the need to define themselves by their dislike of a certain computer brand. 😕
For many people Apple is a good (if relatively expensive) solution.
thx1138Free MemberI’m trying to convince my wife to get an iPad for the house, and so far she’s resisting on the grounds that she doesn’t want to be yet another Apple sheep. Sort of understandable, as so many people bang on and on and on about their wonderful iPhone etc (her best friend has that annoying habit of showing her iPhone off at every opportunity, and referring to it as her ‘iPhone’ rather than just her ‘phone’), but the truth is that it does seem to be the best tablet solution for what we need (internet, email, iPlayer, photos and music). A brief play with various tablets in a shop recently showed that the iPad seems to be nicer to use (or is it style over substance?). I have an Android ‘phone that does everything an iPhone does, more or less, but I have to admit the iPhone is just a bit ‘nicer’. And the Airplay demonstration that I was given recently proved just how well thought out apple products and solutions are. Apple seems to have made exactly what we need. Other manufacturers don’t quite seem to offer that. So an iPad it’ll most probably be then.
grumFree MemberWhat’s being more of a follower of fashion/public perception: buying the thing you actually think looks best, or buying the thing that you think means you aren’t being a ‘sheep’? 🙂

I’ve had a good look, no definition by dislike just hear people go on and on about how good but just don’t see it. Everything apple does the rest do. I live in a seamless integrated world where everything links together. Perhaps there is a little grumpiness about the likes of the BBC & Flickr issuing the new apps in IOS only when it’s not the biggest platform these days. Inventing new fancy words for things that exist to make them sound sexy and new just bores me. Anyway life goes on apple makes money the world will go round.
aracerFree MemberWhat’s also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products.
Apple owner here. Does that allow me to criticise when I’m prepared to look at something without putting on my rose tinted iSpecs?

What’s also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products. Its like the STW atheists’ obsession with religion – distinctly odd. Going back to OP, I am surprised at each of the problems listed. To me ipads have been successful because they have a clear market segment and deliver a product that hits that segment’s needs very, very well. I am normally a real laggard re anything techie, but was an early adopter of Ipads…..no disappointments at all apart from original cost. I get tremendous satisfaction from it mutliple times a day. Why, because it works and does what I need brilliantly.
grumFree MemberYup, feel free aracer – not denying there are issues – certain things massively frustrate me about Apple, but generally I find their stuff very well thought out and reliable. I think their marketing creates a false impression that everything is totally perfect every time, but then who believes everything you are told by advertising?

The practical reasons for this have been gone over many times – more devices/versions of Android makes development/testing a much bigger job. One of the advantages of Apple’s approach. No point moaning about the BBC when it’s a fundamental issue with your choice of device.
MrSmithFree MemberI’m trying to convince my wife to get an iPad for the house, and so far she’s resisting on the grounds that she doesn’t want to be yet another Apple sheep. Sort of understandable,
Irrational purchasing decisions are the norm. Look at white jeans, softroader vehicles and superdry clothing for example.
grumFree MemberI get tremendous satisfaction from it mutliple times a day.
Steady on, I’m not sure that’s healthy.
teamhurtmoreFree MemberGrum – I thought that might need an edit, but had more faith in my fellow forum-ites!!! 😉
TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsSTRFull MemberI think that for me a 5 inch or 6 inch phone would be ideal. Then jump up in size to a laptop with real key board, printer drivers and proper photo editing software
This. I find my Galaxy Note 2 fine for daytime stuff and is still pocketable. Laptop for other stuff.
Daughter has an iPhone 4 and I have no idea why anyone would want one of those horrible things either. Nice enough to look at, but it ends there for me. Dislike iTunes and dislike the UI. Just my opinion though, no problem with people who do like them.

You have to ask that on a thread full of fanbois? 😉
MrSmithFree MemberYou have to ask that on a thread full of fanbois?
You forgot the haters who are there to keep the discussion on an even keel.
MrSmithFree MemberI think their marketing creates a false impression that everything is totally perfect every time
I don’t think I have seen any Microsoft advertising featuring the ‘blue screen of death’ ?
grumFree MemberDaughter has an iPhone 4 and I have no idea why anyone would want one of those horrible things either.
Again, why has it provoked such a strong reaction of disgust? I really don’t get it. I love my IPhone 4S – it’s a great bit of kit – but you’ll not see me slating Samsung Galaxy or Google stuff. I’m sure they’re also very good. 😕
GrahamSFull MemberI don’t think I have seen any Microsoft advertising featuring the ‘blue screen of death’ ?
Not intentionally..
zokesFree MemberAgain, why has it provoked such a strong reaction of disgust? I really don’t get it. I love my IPhone 4S
But you say you love yours? 🙄
grumFree MemberYes I ‘love it’ ie I think it’s great. However I don’t feel the need to denigrate other devices in order to feel better about my choice.
Don’t really see where the need is for the eye roll smiley TBH – pretty obvious distinction between those two things. Nice selective quoting too.
TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsSTRFull MemberI’ve used one and really don’t like it. I think it’s horrible. Simples
grumFree MemberIts funny though, check all the reviews and they’re pretty glowing in general – probably millions of happy customers out there. But it’s ‘horrible’? Really? Or just not quite to your taste? Again, some people just seem very keen to prove they’re not ‘sheeple’.
ALL of these recent high end smartphones are absolutely amazing devices IMO, yet the number of people moaning on about how one is better than the other (which means the other one must be AWFUL) is just ridiculous.
GrahamSFull MemberWhy is Apple’s share price falling (genuine question)?
Increasing competition from Android platforms and worries that without Jobs they’ll return to their old less profitable ways?
TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsSTRFull MemberIs it really a hard concept to grasp? I don’t like it. I didn’t like the UI on her iPod touch. Similarly I had a Nokia N97 mini and I hated that with a passion.
joao3v16Free MemberiPad’s are a bit ‘Ford Mondeo’ really – pretty good at what they do, but awfully common 😀
johndohFree MemberWhy is Apple’s share price falling (genuine question)?
Profits, although substantial, were not as high as expected.
robdobFree MemberNot going to get an iPad, despite being an avid iPhone user. Can’t see the point, I have tried a few types too, Apple, Android etc.
I was talking about this to my wife last night – I think some people buy things like that and the stuff they can do gives them more to do. I can imagine that if you use one for work then it’s pretty useful (a friend of mine is a computer animator and it’s pretty much essential for him in so many ways).
My iPhone does pretty much anything I need to be done on the internet so I don’t need another device letting me do new tasks better and easier that I was never doing in the first place……. 😉
GrahamSFull MemberMy iPhone does pretty much anything I need to be done on the internet so I don’t need another device
I spent a couple of years using the iPhone as my “sofa surfer” device. Then I got an iPad.
Now the vast majority of sofa surfing is done on the iPad. (I still use the iPhone for the odd casual read or when I can’t be arsed getting up to get the iPad 🙂 )
Plus the tablet means I can read magazines, which you can’t really do effectively on the phone.
CougarFull MemberGreat thread guys, just read through it over lunch. Some of apologistic comments are comedy gold. No SD slot? That’s a feature, means you can’t lose cards! Can’t print? Obviously that’s a Windows issue!
Fact of the matter is, iPads are really good. Android tablets are very good, bargain bucket devices aside. They both do similar jobs in slightly different ways, and have pros and cons for each. To say one platform is inherently “better” than the other is just brand snobbery.
I have a Nexus 7. Would I swap it for an iPad Mini? No chance. Is it “better”? No, I simply prefer it, it’s better for me personally.
