After the recent PSA for Hope hubs at Merlin, I’m building a new set of wheels for my gravel bike.

The bike is typically used for peak district riding, the sort of thing that should probably be done on a hardtail but allowing an easier ride to and from the start.

There are some good deals in DT Swiss rims right now. Particularly looking at XR391 and XM421.

Most of my other bikes are running LB carbon rims and I’ve been really pleased with the heating they’ve taken.

The original wheels on the Camino are already dinged but then they are only Sonder Alpha.

The LB carbon Vs DT alloy is about 2:1 price wise. Similar 25mm width and all 400-450 grams.

However, given that I’m only running 45-50mm tyres, are the DT rims going to get banged up? I’ve got it in my mind that the thicker bead lip on the carbon wheels will be more resilient.

Am I doing to DT Swiss rims a disservice?

Any useful thoughts and experience out there?
