    if you want to shift the final pounds, i suggest high intensity intervals twice a week. 3 sets of 5 x 30 sec max, 30 sec recovery, 4 mins between sets.

    Are you people who are experiencing performance drops taking carbs whilst riding?

    Ok… First off, the plan IS working fine…
    Before this plan it was always my opinion that i was carrying enough fuel around my gut for any ride, and my 30 mile xc fitness loop was a doddle, but i could tell i'd fully processed any food i'd eaten that day, by what came out the other end.. Water only on the ride and maybe a fruit juice as well on really hot or strenuous days.
    Trail centres usually needed an isotonic drink and sometimes an energy gel.

    On this plan, i haven't done any XC as my bike is in bits, so its been trail centres on the 7 inch Orange Pat.
    I could normally do four loops in about 3 hours, pushing up steep bits.
    Since the plan its been two loops. My quads have been totally powerless.

    Until yesterday, when i took a nut / grain based 9Bar half hour before the ride followed by half a bottle of Lucosade energy at the bottom of the hill and the rest at the top. The difference was chalk and cheese, times were better and push ups were less lung busting with hardly any breathers.
    Same-ish today, but the diet slightly slipped at lunchtime where i took 1 pitta bread with my pastrami salad. Because of this i gave up the 9Bar, but still took half a bottle of lucosade at the bottom and the rest at the top.
    The results were not so dramatic as yesterday, but i did manage to clean some climbs that had defeated me even pre iDave..

    So it would seem that at least for tough trail centres, i need to combine fast acting and slow release carbs for fuel to get me round.

    I'm not really sure why there would be a performance drop. I've been on a similar diet for about a year, albeit with cereals for breakfast and fruit in sted of veg, and regularly do 75km rides without problems.

    I've just started the diet, or changed the breakfast to eggs and chorizo and also fuit for veg to see what happens.

    Maybe I'm missing something, but I posted on one of these threads that dried lentils contain 60g carbohydrate per 100g, so you are receiving carbs whilst on the diet, or is there something I don't understand?

    ah, go on then. It's a little difficult for me as I work on an American base and can only eat in their mess hall, but I'm sure I can structure it around what's on the hot plate.

    Completely agree, the change from pasta and rice to beans and lentils is awesome.

    One quick question, could you explain the advantage of the chorizo? I'm considering a change to chicken as the chorizo is quite fatty. Or does the fat serve a purpose?

    Cholesterol is also something I'm thinking about too, but as I'm only using it for a couple of weeks it's not really an issue.

    The change isn't difficult and trying new foods is ace. I'm now addicted to quinoa!!

    Well I'm now on day 5, and having mixed, but mainly good feelings about this. Weighed in this morning, and I seem to have lost 3 lbs which is pretty amazing for so few days. I have been eating loads of the suggested stuff too, and am really getting into spicy bean salads, lentils. The thing I am finding hardest is breakfast as I just don't find eggs at all appetising in the morning, especially in omelette form… And if fried/boiled/poached you just need some bread to soak up all that yummy yolk don't you?

    Tried avocado for breakfast this morning, which felt much better, I hope that fits in with the plan, I guess so as its not sweet, and it passes the custard test.

    I was wondering as chick peas are allowed whether I could use Garam flour to make some kind of healthy bread alternative? Any thoughts?

    One problem I have found is that being allowed to drink red wine with a meal means I have to eat very long drawn out meals that last a lot of the evening in order to maintain my alchoholic credentials 😉

    Did a long ride on friday and felt quite a lot weaker than normal, succumbed and had a mule bar that was in my backpack a couple of hours in and it tasted amazing, and really kept me going. I tend to eat a lot when riding, and maybe this will help me to control how much I'm taking in whilst i'm on the bike.

    Anyhow I'm sticking with it for the moment, and really enjoying the challenge of thinking of new meals to eat.

    Weighed myself after my first week and I appeared to have dropped 1.4 kilos. Not a huge amount, but I have noticed a reduction in beer gut.

    I feel more awake than normal during th day too, but my legs seem to get tired more quickly. I also had a crisis on Friday where I could not face another meal containing lentils. Even Tabasco and raw chili couldn't help me out that day. Luckily the treat day sorted me out.

    Butter beans are nice. You can also mash them up with bit of garlic.

    still working for me.

    Went from about 14/9 or 14/10 (on our scales at home which might read slightly under) to just about 14/0 over the course of 4-6 weeks.

    Then went on holiday for a fortnight and while i didn't blow out, I also didn't specifically avoid anything, and given it was camping in France a reasonable qty of french bread and croissants were consumed – equally, a reasonable qty of barbecued meat and fresh veg. Was pleasantly surprised to not have gained a lot over that time.

    Then went back determinedly to iDave's plan all of last week, and was surprised to see 13/12 or 13/13 on the scales this am.

    Also had an odd 'day off' this weekend; sat daytime was on plan, then a curry Sat night incl stuffed paratha and a bit of rice. Sun breakfast was brioche, lunch was a chicken casserole with the trimmings incl roast potatoes, followed by rice pudding, and then back on plan last night. Seemingly no ill effects (which i didn't think there would be anyway)

    1.6kg this week. Pretty pleased with this as I haven't felt hungry or lacking energy at all.

    on my 'whatever i want' day I hoffed a takeaway curry which help me shit shift another 500 grams. Nice.

    I couldn't do the eggs everyday thing, so I turned to the beans. Esp as I don't eat breakfast until I get to work.

    So, carry breakfast in plastic lock-n-lock or some such container, within which are beans in a dressing, etc.

    Found a nice JO reciepe for a Japanese style dressing, tastes very good.

    Mmm made home made Tarka Dall last night. Num Num very good. So good that even though its my day off today I'm still eating Lentils 😉

    Recipe is very simple:

    Rinse Yellow lentils till the water runs clear then cook for about 30 mins or until slightly mushy.
    Fry up a generous amount of Cumin seeds, followed by fresh ginger a couple of chillis and a finely chopped onion
    liquidize / mash 3 or 4 tomatoes and 4 (or more) cloves garlic
    Add garlic/tomato paste to the frying pan and cook, adding Garam Masala. Simmer for about 5-10 mins
    Stir in the herb mix to the cooked lentils, with some water to get the texture right.
    Heat together for a few minutes and mix in a handful of chopped coriander.

    I had it with some fresh spinach on the side. Very tasty 😉

    AHHHHH I'm Falling off the plan I thought I had cracked it but no. I had friday off because I got pissed on thursday then saturday was kinda off and sunday. Now monday I had cake and today and I had toast for breakfast need to be strong. I need 3 militant days.

    Late home friday and kids were taken on a trip by gramps from School, so chippy for tea, Day off on saturday but due to slippage on friday we started well on plan foods up until we went out. Beer and Spangled. Not a good mix. Sunday we were recovering so comfort food was order of the day. Monday i found a cheap source of polenta flour so it was Cornbread for tea.
    Today was school cookery for number 1 daughter, where the imagination-less tossers had her "making" Pizza, so we HAD to eat that for tea.

    Must try harder tomorrow.

    haha! I wouldn't mind but i lost 1 stone and have been stuck ever since for 6 weeks +

    12.6 stone is okay I'd much prefer to reach 11.6 stone like hell am I going back up to the high 13's. Why is that looking at a cake puts 2 pounds on. 😆

    What I have found is that there is not the tendency to put on weight again unless you make a concerted effort. I've lost about 20lbs but have varied it from the 'diet' to pretty much pigging out on anything from chocolate to chips in the past few weeks and have only put on a couple of pounds. What is worrying, is that I seem to have lost all desire for beer 😯

    I'm going to Portugal in 2 weeks so from tomorrow, it's back on the plan strictly. Must look good for the laydeez in my Speedos 8)

    Hmmm….. We used to hit pubs like Wetherspoons and the likes for the selection of real ales, and we have always drank vodka and coke..
    Since the plan the booze of choice has been voddy with diet lemonade or coke, sliding in to full fat coke as the night progresses, the real ale has took a back burner..

    Yes – combination of factors, living on my own/trying to save some money so reduction in 'social drinking', working shifts, 'diet' and as much as anything, I just seem to have got out of the habit.

    It's been quite a few months now – I've still got three cases of lager under the stairs with Fabio Capello and the England World Cup squad on the label 😆

    height 1,81m

    Body fat 25,1% (???)
    Fat content 17,3kg (???)

    So the fat is going and I'm getting shorter!!! I'm not sticking rigidly to the diet as I'm still eating fruit and had a fry up yesterday. But generally going in the right direction.
    See if sticking to the diet this week brings any more significant changes. Not too sure about the fat figures as I was around 20% at the beginning of the year. 😯

    A better machine for measuring. That’s me pretty much finished with the diet. Moving back to a more fruit based diet and I’ll still keep up with the weigh ins.
    For me it was an interesting diet, clearly the weight and fat has been lost. 😀
    I did find the lack of fibre was a slight problem, there was a reduction in fibre from my previous diet.
    Energy wise I don’t think there were any problems as I was riding up to 450km in a week, but I did cheat by eating bananas on the rides.

    All in all worth it, but I’ll be glad to get rid of chorizo for breakfast… 😆

    Amen to that! I eat cake in the morning and it has little effect on the diet, though if you want to lose more you gotta be really strict!

    @iDave a month ago I weighed 70,6kg or a little more. A year ago when I started I was probably closer to 78-80kg.
    Have you thought of posting the diet up somewhere so people can download rather than waiting for emails??
