My colleague shares a five bed room house and they currently split it 5 ways between five people. One of the people is moving in her boyfriend what would be an equitable way to split the rent now?

    Thanks guys.

I’d think a 5 way split on rent, 6 ways on utilities and council tax.

I would say the rent is split between the rooms so they can pay the same amount split between them but he has to cover the extra electricity and water bill etc.

    5 ways on fixed costs
    6 ways on variable costs

Assuming her bf is moving into her room id split it 6 way as more shared space is being taken up by the 6th person. If that feels a little harsh then maybe 1.5x the room cost + an even 6way split on utilities.

6 ways. The couple won’t like it, but if they’re lefties they should be happy with the communal aspect and if they’re righties they’ll, no doubt, be all about the big society.

The question is not how to split the rent it’s how much notice to give.

Yeah, even though he’s in the same bedroom he’ll be increasing queueing time for the bathroom (assuming not all en suite), using up valuable fridge and laundry drying space etc. I’d go with alexxx/Rob’s view.

Ahh but he’ll be using 16.7% of the capacity of the kitchen, living room bathroom therefore each resident should recieve a rebate proportional to the ration of floorspace in bedroom to floorspace in the communal areas

Split rent into 2, then divide one half by 5 – bedrooms, the other half by 6 – shared space. Split bills by 6.

Council tax is a fixed cost, not a variable one ( 😛 @ Junky) it doesnt move around once there’s more than 1 person living there.

Without pics we don’t really know…, which dictates the ‘price’ 😉

We had similar as students.. We (the remaining single occupancy rooms) insisted we now split rent 6 ways, as use of the bedroom was a small factor..shared bathrooms, lounge etc.
Plus, we didn’t want the gf living there abx were too afraid to say so outright, so went about it in little ways like this..

I’ve no idea but sharing a house with 5 others sounds like a nightmare!

I’d go for 6 ways, unless you ban the bf from the rest of the house.

Presumably all the rooms are not the same size or have the same features (en-suite, view out window, quieter side of house etc) do they actually split rent equally 5 ways at present? If so is this normal?

To keep it simple, he should just pay the same as everyone else is already paying at the moment.

This will build up a nice kitty for communal nice things.

if you’re under about 26 it can be an absolute riot. Or a nightmare, depending on your housemates!

I suspect that with current house prices it will increasingly be the norm until today’s kids are around 30. I’ve heard of adults in London sharing rooms to keep costs down 😐

Please post up a floorplan so that differences in bedroom footprint can be assessed and added into the algorithm.

Also a brief summary of your respective cooking and washing habits. Anyone who takes one shower a month gets a discount.

Surely the one with the boyfriend already has some thoughts on the matter (is she assuming it’ll be a freebie?) – might complicate things.

Agree with the rent split idea – whether its 50% for bedrooms, 50% for living space or 25% bedroom, 75% living space depends on the way they use the house. And split all bills 6 ways.

Penalties for excessive noctural noises 😉

When I moved to London I was sharing with 5 others. It was a pretty big house, but it was cheap-ish for London.

Only 2 of us were in our 20s. One was in his 40s. He was saving up for a house deposit. He was a head teacher at a local school. Make of that what you will.

Ask them if they are remainers or leavers if they are leavers….tell them to do so

Split it 6 ways. You’re all paying for the a roof over your heads, the location of the house, proximity to tall the stuff, it being a nice place to be, warm, dry, hot and cold running water, fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, hob/oven, garden if you’re lucky.

The new person in the house needs to pay for their share of all that. Plus they get cuddles and sex.

What the rest of you get is all less access to what you’re getting now.

Always adopted a policy of everyone has to pay rent somewhere, so other halves are welcome as long as they dont call it home. So if theyre moving in they should be paying the same as everyone else, although to be fair youd also have to give them the best room if they don’t already.

Do you have 2 bathrooms? I thought the law was 6 people need 2 bathrooms. Could be an issue for the landlord.
