How much to put an RSJ into a load bearing wall?

Looking to put 2 into normal interior walls. Load bearing, but nothing ‘special’. How much have you paid over what length. Did the price include finishing or just leaving you with a big old hole?

Think rule of thumb is £ 1,000 start

We paid £120 for somebody to come and fit the RSJ
I bought the RSJ, sorted out the building regs (no calcs needed) and knocked the wall down myself.

It’s whatever you want it to be regarding finishing! If you get building control involved they’ll want them fire protecting and load calcs etc. Have you any idea of the loads above? Walls/floors/roof?? It’s a seemples job to be fair, get some strong backs on acros and get chopping. Steel in, pack well up with slate/non compressible material erc and make good.

DIY – what could possibly go wrong???

We wanted to keep costs down but not brave enough to go the full DIY route and not convinced it would save us money if we needed to hire acros.

I put in the building notice, got building control to come round and take a look and confirm they were happy with size beam we were getting, ordered the beam, paid a builder £150 to fit, knocked the wall down, boarded with fireboard, got building control back in to sign off.

So builder was £150, building control was £160 ish, steel was £80. We already had a skip hired because of other work but it’s something to factor in, it’s amazing how much stuff a bit of wall contains.

Knocking walls down is very therapeutic 🙂
