how many times have you done your commute?

doris5000Free Member
Cycling through the park this evening it occurred to me that I’ve cycled that route well over a thousand times in each direction. Would be closer to 2,000 if Long COVID hadn’t **** me up.
I figure you’d do it 1000 times in 5 years, if you cycle 90% of the time.
Seems like a lot when you put it that way. Anyone up to 5 thousand??
tomhowardFull MemberAs in, how many times have I been to and from work? Or on a bike?
if the former, loads. If the latter, loads, but less than the former
thisisnotaspoonFree MemberSwitched offices in the summer months ago, so probably ~80 each way? Probably a thousand to the previous office. I live close enough that it would take me longer to drive
retrorickFull MemberI did my full commute by bike yesterday adding 1 more trip too a small amount of trips over the past 20 years. If I had reasonable hours I’d ride more often but 0430 starts and 0230 finishes rule that out. So maybe 100 times in 20 years. Half commutes bike and public transport might be nearer to 30%?
8tonFull Memberretired now.
cycled to and from work from the age of 16 to retiring at 55. and i never drove or were driven in all those years.
longest commute was 15 mile each way. only for 7 years. the rest were 10 mile each way.
no idea of how far or how many times that it but it is a lot.
TheGingerOneFull MemberOnce since lockdown started, was up to 3 or 4 times a week before that for a couple of years
doris5000Free MemberAs in, how many times have I been to and from work? Or on a bike?
Either, really. Just struck me as kind of mad that one could do the exact same journey, literally thousands of times. At least i am lucky enough that i enjoy quite a lot of mine 🙂
tthewFull MemberThat’s an awesome commuting record @ton plus you’ve been very fortunate to be living within a reasonable distance of work all your employment life.
15 miles each way is a few more than I’d want to do mind.
DracFull MemberCycled a handful of times as it was quicker to walk then to get the bike out. Drove a few times on other commutes due a location change.
Probably around 6000 times minus holidays will out it down to about 5500 at a rough guess, now it’s zero.
fossyFull MemberBeen at current place for 17 years (two different offices). Bike commuted 5 days a week for 9 years, then got my spine broken, was off bike commuting for about 6 years, and after covid, started bike commuting again, just over two years ago. Three or four days a week these days.
w00dsterFull MemberCar commute for me. And sob story…..I work really long hours, live in North Wales and commute to Liverpool. Only lasted doing this for 9 months. 30-33 miles each way. Just bought a flat in Liverpool so I’m closer to work. I will then have a 3 mile bike ride to the office….cant wait!!
Previously worked in London so used to have a 4 mile each way commute to the station. Did that 5 days a week for about 5 years.
fossyFull MemberOver the last (almost) 40 years I’ve cycle commuted a fair amount, other than when working over 30 miles away – I only did that a few times – very long days doing 60 miles then 8 hours in the office. 10 miles is is ideal with the option to extend it. I never drive in these days.
n0b0dy0ftheg0atFree MemberI’d guess 800-900 times between ’17 and autumn ’22, only ~5 miles each way on a 3-day week, before covid became long covid and ended up taking ill health retirement from being a postie.
vazahaFull MemberI’ve probably cycled my route to work ~ 3 times a week for 20 years, possibly a bit more, but that only brings me up to 3000 +
Still some way to go. 🙂
desperatebicycleFull MemberBeen at my place 9 years..pre-covid, onsite every day, rode in nearly every day..Then there was lockdown, now I’m on site 3 days a week usually. Have 3 different road routes, 2 different semi-offroad routes (dry summer only) … So, er, absolutely no idea..lots.
1jonbaFree MemberOnly just moved jobs so I’m figuring out a new commute. 19 times each way. Probably only about 5 of those on the bike as I wasn’t able to ride for a bit.
tall_martinFull Member5 years at my current work, cycling in most days. So about 2,000 to 1,500
andrewhFree MemberIt’s basically what strava’s Local Legend highlights…
I quite like mine. Mostly road bike this year and last, and more van than I would like due to long covid. Prior to that I could take the MTB and do an EWS stage on the way home. Fingers crossed for that again next year.
Anyway, i’ve worked there just under seven years, two years of weird lockdowns and some WFH post COVID so I’m going to guess 1,200ish, maybe a bit less.
6DaffyFull Member@ton – assuming a 5 day working week that’s 10 journeys a week at an average of 48weeks a year (assuming 4 weeks holiday) over almost 40y is over 19000 commutes and over 200k miles. Which is over 50t of CO2 saved and £32300 pocketed. Well done sir!
1DaffyFull MemberI’ve been riding to work from my current house for 10y at 3-4times a week and a 40mile round trip, but I use a variety of routes.
10y, 48w a year, 7 times a week at 20 miles a time. So 3300 commutes and 67k miles.
ads678Full MemberI miss cycle commuting. Used to do it at least 3 times a week pre covid. Now I either work from home, remote sites too far away to cycle or Doncaster office and 20 miles each way is too far for me. Maybe next summer I’ll give it a go…
4tonFull MemberWhich is over 50t of CO2 saved and £32300 pocketed.
and this is one of the reasons i changed my bike so frequently when i was working.
used to tell the wife it was my work vehicle, and was far cheaper than a car………. she use to tell me to stop talking testicles……… lol
lairdburkartFree MemberYes it’s a lot. 5 days a week for over 25 years now. Imagine how many pedal revolutions it could be. No wonder my knees are so noisy.
davy90Free MemberEnough to have the local legend on some bits but only 2-3 times a week for the last 7 years. We’ve just moved to offices further out in North London, now 17 miles each way…. Which is a bit further than I’d like timewise….
mattcartlidgeFull Member10 years total to current job, 5 days a week pre COVID, now 3 mostly 3 days or occasional 4 days. Various routes into Manchester along the canal 5.5 to around 14 miles. Still absolutely love it.
mertFree MemberJust struck me as kind of mad that one could do the exact same journey
That’d drive me nuts!
I did five days a week (barring injury) for about 11 years to three or four jobs and probably ten different worksites.
Almost always took the same (shortest) route to whichever location i was at and mixed it up on the way home. Got some funny looks from colleagues asking why they thought they’d seen me ten miles north of work riding across a moor somewhere, when i lived 10 miles south of work…I’ve commuted to/from the current job by bike about twenty times, in nearly twenty years.
It is a rather long commute though, my record time, one way is 3:10…nbtFull MemberOver 12 years I probably clocked up about 600 commutes to my old office in hyde, with numbers steadily climbing as I commuted more frequently and more regularly – at one point I was cycle commuting 3 or 4 times a week and some weeks did 5 days. Numbers dropped off drastically after covid when I started working from home more or less full time, though I did start doing lunchitme rides on the tandem with Mrs NBT one or two days a week.
We moved office to the middle of Manchester almost a year ago and I’ve cycle commuted to that office maybe 12 to 15 times.
worsFull MemberSimilar to @ton reckon I’ve cycled to work 4 out of 5 days for the last 28 years! I should get tax relief!
AlexFull MemberI did 5 years of Home-Station (5 miles) – Train – Marylebone-Strand (4 miles) four times a week 47 weeks of the year. Couldn’t take bike on train so had a very old ratty MTB at Marylebone. Was knocked off twice and had quite a few altercations mostly with Taxis. Once pulled over for riding while drunk having run a red light by ducking under the wing mirror of a police van 🙂
Did another two years when we moved. 3 days a bit further on the home end, but could take the nice road bike on the train so was a lot quicker.
Can’t say I really miss it. Especially riding in London. It was fun for a while (riding the big red hedge on oxford street for example) but I think if I did it now I’d be WAY less motivated. Still quite proud never got on the tube in London for those 5 years!
fossyFull MemberI’ve an option of two off road routes into Manchester – one on bridleways and through parks, the other along two canals. Stopped the canal commute two years ago as the winter was coming and the drive chain eating was insane with all the crud.
My current off-road route has had to be modified to mainly road in the evening due to scallywags being around in the early evening (I was attacked in September). Still perfecting the evening route
easilyFree MemberIve just left my job and made a rough calculation of how many cycle commutes I’d done.
I reckon i got close to 1500, and i only fell in the canal once in all that time.
StuFFull MemberI’m up to about 78, but I’m only in the office 1 day a week and only been cycleable distance from the office for 18 months. I don’t think I’ve not bothered because of bad weather, luckily missed most of the ice and only had to divert a couple of times cos of floods.
It’s definitely a perk of working in this office, always sets me up for the day.
IdleJonFree MemberI’ve been riding to work from my current house for 10y at 3-4times a week and a 40mile round trip, but I use a variety of routes.
10y, 48w a year, 7 times a week at 20 miles a time. So 3300 commutes and 67k miles.
What’s the circumference of the world, 25.000 miles?
I noticed that I passed that on Strava this year and I’ve only been on Strava for about 8 or 9 years but have ridden lots for 30 years, so am curious about how many times I’ve ridden around the world! 😀 Lots of commuting to various places in among all that riding, especially in the last 5 years where I was normally making a 20 mile round trip daily.
crazy-legsFull MemberI miss cycle commuting. Used to do it at least 3 times a week pre covid. Now I either work from home, remote sites too far away to cycle or Doncaster office and 20 miles each way is too far for me.
I miss it too, I’ve even started putting on weight!
Did 5 years of shift work almost exclusively cycling, that was about 8 miles each way.
Then 12 years at 2 jobs in Manchester so god knows how many times I traipsed up and down the A6.
Mostly WFH now and the current office is too far to reliably commute. I’m hoping to get an e-bike on C2W and start a combined train/bike commute, that’d be good.
desperatebicycleFull MemberNot quite up there with Ton, cos I do drive occasionally (like today!) But worked out I’ve been commuting by bike for 32 years. If I’d cycled half of the days by bike, that’s 6000ish rides, various distances, so average 15 miles each way… crikey that’s 180K miles. All that fuel saved, why aren’t I rich!?
ChrisLFull MemberI first started cycling to work in 2003, and most of the time since then I reckon I’ve managed to keep the strong majority of my commutes as being by bike, so let’s say comfortably over 3,000 days of commuting by bike.
davespike1981Full Memberdue to very detailed site access system information i’m looking at 4465 commutes of 23 miles each way along the coast road in West Wales, of which to my shame only 4 have been by bike.
crazy-legsFull MemberCan’t say I really miss it. Especially riding in London.
I love riding in London! Whenever I visit, I use Lime bikes quite a bit. I did use Santander for years as a preference but then they changed their subscription model.
P20Full MemberI only have a two mile commute, over the last 8yrs it works around 1200 times, allowing for the odd time I’ve needed to take the van. I find it a good way of switching off from work.
jimwFree MemberA quick calculation suggests that in the 13 1/2 years at my last place of full time work it was about 2600 days so at 24 miles a day about 60k miles. Like Davespike I am ashamed how few were on a bike but in my partial defence I had quite a bit of stuff to transport most days.
My current commute is about 10 metres each way from the kitchen to my work room. I like home working.
