I’ve a pro5 rear wheel to fit, but its an HG freehub and the bike was originally MS 12 spd

Its an ebike with all the housings routed internally(PITA) and i was intending to swop it all to 10spd, new mech/shifter, but that means new cable and housing and is going to be an even bigger pain, so just going to retain the 12spd set up, maybe a new cable. (The original mech XT is in vgc)

Far as i can see the swop out to change the new hub from HG to MS is just to buy and fit the different freehub.

System is 148mm boost, so just to double double check, even though i know, always best to double check and its this freehub i want

Microspline uses a different slightly longer end cap, unsure if the freehub comes with this so worth checking.

If not, you’ll need this too.

Last time I did a freehub swap on a Pro 4, I needed the end cap as well.

Not what your asking by no need for a new outer when swapping to 10spd unless the current one is too short (doubtful). If you are happy swapping the cable for the existing 12spd that suggests the outer is fine.

For what you are asking as above just swap the freehub and end cap to the MS version.

Is it a standard Pro 5 hub or an Ebike Pro 5?

I don’t think you can just bang an Ebike freehub on the standard hub.

I could be wrong but just going off the fact that my Ebike hubshell has  54 POE stamped on it and the standard hubs are 108.

I can’t see the shell being different but maybe the drive ring is.

only thing to add, i recently did an XD to HG on a pro 4, straightforward enough, but the big seal takes some major patience or the hope tool to fit, i nearly thought it was impossible without it, so if the 5 is anything similar…..

Pro 5 seal is different to Pro 4.

There’s a technique to getting the Pro 4 seal in.

Once you have it it’s easy.

There may well be hub shell differences but from looking at hopes site they suggest that the key ebike differences are 54poe by all 6 pawls engaging (Vs 108 on normal by 2 offset groups of 3 pawls) and a steel freehub body. That would suggest the same drive ring.

I think you can, the difference is in the positioning of the pawls on the freehub.  Ebike version they all engage at the same time to give 54 points but on the regular version they are in offset pairs giving 108 points.  At least I think that is the case.

That would suggest the same drive ring.

That could well be right having just watched the video on hopes site.

I was just suggesting it might be different given that the POE number is etched into the shell.

Might pull my freehub off and have a look. Could do with a service anyway.

Oops, looks like I can’t even get the number of pawls right but I was thereabouts on the theory 🙂

Its the whole thing. chainring is 12spd, so I’d need to change that and that might affect chainline(or not, but I dont know), so i think it best to retain the 12spd, so i only need change the drivetrain(ring/cassette/chain

Is it a standard Pro 5 hub or an Ebike Pro 5?

I think I got the wheel from crc (or merlin, or somewhere, cant remember)  but given its a standard alloy HG freehub, it is more likely to be the standard, and after looking on the Hope site under documents, there is a distinct difference between the Ebike body and standard 148 body, as well as different Ebike and standard freehubs

I’ll need to track down the info to know exactly which it is then go from there.

I was just suggesting it might be different given that the POE number is etched into the shell.

Etched onto the shell, just behind the driveside flange it says ‘max 108 points of engagement 6 pawls’, which kind of suggests you can fit 54 or 108, which itself is not the idea you get looking at 2 different hub shells and 2 different freehubs, unless of course theres a 54 or 108 in ebike flavors designed for the Eshell or the standard shell.

Might send Hope an email, but i think it best i try to get the info on which i bought. Be in my emails somewhere.

My bet is the hub shell is the same but for ebike they only do a 32 hole version. Etching on the shell will give a good indicator in the vast majority of cases what parts you’ll find. It also gives any future buyer an indication of the hubs past. A bit like the hubs from factory wheels bring marked as hope hoops even though physically they are the same.

Hope have separate exploded view documents but they don’t give any indication of any difference in the hub shell though it is a different part number.  Pleased I read this thread as I have an e-bike version I’d assumed I could just swap the free hub to an alloy one should it take my fancy. I am now doubting that so following this with interest

lol. Takes me 3 weeks to do anything. Besides, I kind of like keeping unused Hope stuff. I’ve boxes of older components, spacers, axles etc from yesteryear. They eventually prove handy
