I’m getting through cheap deore bottom brackets about every 3 months – single speeding . That’s still less than £50 a year.

Question , anybody know if a hope or even a Chris King BB would last long enough to justify their cost ?

Yep both mine are now cheaper than sending shimano to landfills on the std ss bearings. Also feels better nit to be buying components that you know will fail

7 years 3 bikes 1 hope bb so yeah worth it. Not long fitted new bearings as the originals were getting a little notchy.

Recently upgraded my Race Face BB on my SS after it lasted all of 4 months to a HOPE S/S BB… I’ve fitted them to all my bikes the longest serving one is 2 years old now and still spins lovely.. and it’s made by a chap on a computer in Lancashire!

Hope ceramic here, only 1 year old BUT flawless. Bought because its SO highly recommended on STW.

Go on, you know you want to… In Red!!!

+1 for ceramic Hope. I used to get through Shimano BBs in about 9 months – gritty, sandy water in the autumn, spring and winter just chews them up. I’ve now had my ceramic Hope in for at least 4 years and it’s just as smooth as the day it went in.

My ceramic hope lasted nearly two years. I rode it lots too in filth and rain. Think I swapped out the grease once but that was late on it’s life and it was probably already dead tbf.

replaced it with an xtr just to get me through winter then i’ll probably swap the bearings in the old hope cups.

Around four and a half years of use from my XT bb – regular hacking around the local trails and zero maintainance ~ I’m just not hardcore enough 🙁

it begs the question – are you fitting them properly?

I’ve run all the Shimanos, Hope, CK, RF and Hope are okay but they aren’t sealed very well so do wear. Upside is you can swap out the bearings. I run CK on the commuter, and I re-grease it with the injector tool every few months.

Wow , bottom brackets lasting years rather than months , thank you gentle men , think I’ll take the plunge with Hope then.

I’d suggest stop fannying around with Deores anyway, they’re not very good. SLX lasts about 3 times longer for me than my Deores did. (XTR seems much the same as SLX)

@Northwind , I started using the deores because the XTs didn’t last any longer & didn’t wanna risk 3X as much on XTR.

To be fair to shimano , these components are designed for light weight , geared bikes , not a 16 stone SSer !

I don’t mind spending more on something that might last more than 5 minutes , hence , the Hope question.

Ah, fair dos, you’re killing them in a different way than me then.

3 years on a Hope ceramic, and lots of miles – and this year, lots of wet miles…

I didn’t find any difference in the longevity of the Shimano BBs – they all seem the same to me, i.e. let water and grit through like a colander. I did find I could take them apart (even though it says don’t) and grease them properly and fully, but best done before you fit them the first time.

XT bbs have the same bearings as deore? but smaller gap of the top hat, lets less dirt it? not sure of xtr?

My Deutsche sourced XTR hasnt lasted any longer than XT, but to be honest I think I overtightened it.
