Im about to rip 150 odd vinyl albums, TD160, rewired RB300, valhalla, dnm start and hifi sound card.

Cartridge is a 15 year old etile…what should i replace that with for archiving? Am thinking cheap…

cheapest really decent cartridge I know of is the Deneon DL304 moving coil – about £200ish

Jeez I’m looking budget…it’s all getting sold after!
I’ll check ebay for what has good resale price…

One of Rega’s? I have the Elys, but there was a Bias before that (around £50).

Get an AT95E it’s the only cheap cartridge worth using.

Yeah, but if you are archiving then you’ll want them to sound listen able to. Best budget cartridge I had was the Goldring 1042. I’ve just googled it though and it’s double the price it was when I got it… 😮
You might get a good trade in price with your old cartridge, worth going into a dealer and finding out anyway.
(I take it you’re keeping the records..)

Thanks…mc only on my pre amp tho.

I guess I’ll keep the discs but gonna flog the kit-not even switched it on it 5+ years and looks like it’s worth a few hundred on scumbay.

If you’re MC only get an AT F3 from Audio Technica off ebay I’m using one and it’s pretty good.

Blimey £170…is my etile likely to be goosed? It never got that much use.

Probably not to be honest. Carts can last ages. The tip is usually good for 1500 hours use however the rubber suspension can perish over time. Best thing to do is try it and if the cartridge body touches the record the suspension may have gone, if it works then hooray. I assume you have a stylus balance and all that?

    I do. Ta.

    Oh no!

…cartridge looked OK….I got my audiophile sound card and set it all up (well…speakers on the floor)….following problems occurred:

    1. it sounds crap
    2. my dnm pre-amp mc stage appears to work on the RH channel only (tested it with another source)
    3. my cyrus 2 mc AND MC stages appear to work on the RH channel only (tested it with another source)

So…I need to get a phono stage and a cartridge, oth to be used for a couple of weeks while I archive the black stuff.

Can anyone help? Got a spare mm phono stage pre-amp I could borrow? Happy to send a cheque as security etc…

You could just download the lot as flacs (if they are available) and be done with it. If you bought the vinyl then I see no major moral issue with doing so.

Honestly? – What he said^^^ Sounds odd though I’m going to be patronising and say check the interconnect between stage and amp.

    stage in in pre-amp.

Yeah I guess I could download the lot, I don’t know much about that law-breaking stuff tho.

Hang on, you have a dnm stage which only works on the RH channel and your Cyrus 2 with built in stage only works on the RH channel too? And you tested this with a deck/cartridge that you know outputs on both channels?

I’d still download them all though.

You near Surrey – I have an MC Michell ISO-HR stage I could lend for a while.

or you could try recording straight into the Audiophile soundcard and then post-procesing an RIAA transform on it – don’t ask me how though…

they are poor value for money (i have tried them all)

currently using a sumiko bluepoint special high output MC, would look at the ortofon 2m range for mm or vivo red MM.
the sumiko blue point no2 is good value but high output so dunno if the impedience will match your phono stage? i used a MC board in my naim with the BPS with no problems just had to not leave the volume at the same level as CD listening

80 quid for an ortofon 2m red from amazon?

Ive got a naim stageline n mm phono stage you could have a lend of, but you’d need a ps and a weird cable to connect it up so it may not be suitable. If the vinyl is old have you thought about cleaning it first?

Was thinking more like one of these. There was one knocking about at work but someone else blagged it before I could stick my oar in. I’ve got loads of vinyl to rip but it’s all pretty dirty so worth cleaning first.

The vinyl is clean I think. Thanks for the offers, I am thinking buy sh pre & cartridge then sell on after at minimum loss In Edinburgh) – actually I’ll ask TBC)

But the sound of ripping them off the internet (see what I did there? 😉 twice? 😀 ) is appealing as I can justify it to myself on ethical grounds and fannying back and forth to the bedroom every 20 minutes for the next 2 weeks…do I just google “bit torrent”?
